Let's Talk about Factom's Repeated Lies and "mistakes" - per cryptonaught's request

As far as factom is concerned, there's a lot that I still can't comment on (was hoping a reporter would do that - but seems like they don't want the story).

Here's a quick an easy TLDR if you'd like. At some point, this scam will bust, and it'll be obvious how that project was managed. If any one of these things happened - IMO, let it slide. But it's a long time pattern.

Let's go over a brief timeline

  • Peter kirby exited the mining scam "Cointerra" before joining Factom. Paul Snow wasn't terribly active in the movement prior, but claimed to be Bitcoin wealthy on camera once or twice.
  • Factom asked everyone in the community to be their "advisors" prior to crowdfunding to gain the trust of the community (I said no)
  • Factom claims that they would have protected against the Sony hack (In multiple languages)
  • The claim at the NABC was that "The Gutenberg press was being stored in Factom". Of course factom only stores hashes. I pushed - and they corrected the record
  • Jimmy Song personally wrote a scathing article on factom on liberty.me. It was removed because of an individual who was clearly involved in the Factom project emailed Jimmy Song's employer and made a veiled threat as to the repercussions of their employees writing critical articles of the project. When confronted about this - Paul Snow did not make any attempt to re-post the content (which imo - was his chance to make the situation 'right' in light of a company that, you know, is supposed to be dedicated to fighting censorship). This article has since (somehow/finally) been reposted.. The series is pretty fucking good.
  • Factom lies about a relationship with DBS ... powering dishwashers? (Because IoT is the buzzword du jour that will sell tokens)
  • The Texas bitcoin conference was an extensive pitch for Factom (Why is a pre-funded company advertising, unless the fundraise is 'the product') and .. Hope Gold Coin (a scam that @junseth managed to crash before it got off the ground, thankfully)
  • Factom promises to great fanfare the securing of a land title deal with hondurus
  • Fundraise happens - and Factom raises far short of the 10 million USD they were planning
  • @junseth confronts factom about the Hondurus deal. Guess what? Never happened. Paul refuses to correct the record, and this fact only goes to light when the chat is published. (Oh btw - also on page 44 of that link is the likely admission that Adam Wagner was paid to astroturf pro-factom articles)
  • Factom's response to the Hondurus deal? A rogue reporter for Reuters
  • So we contact the reporter (Gertrude Chavez) - her response? She spent hours at night with Peter to get the copy perfect. The reporter is outraged that Factom is reporting otherwise and that the entire story was verified by Peter Kirby.
  • Due to disappointing results Factom launches a second fundraise on bnktothefuture.com
  • Somehow, around this point Abhi Dobhal's company "Epigraph" becomes the actual consulting company that Factom takes credit for being. (and for telling its fundraisers, it will be)
  • Due to disappointing results from the first and second fundraise, Factom secures yet another round of funding. In this round - they tell potential investors that they've already sold $1.2 million in software licenses prior. Guess where those licenses came from? Factoid Bagholders and second-round investors that thought they were holding some form of shares and/or tokens. the crowdfunders are the product of Factom.

Meanwhile

  • Peter continually has problems explaining how the software works. So do a lot of people.
  • Because the business model makes no sense. You can store a notarization in the bitcoin blockchain for pennies. Want to store more? Store a merkleroot every ten minutes for 3 cents.
  • Can't be trusted for even ten minutes to tell the truth? I call bullshit on that market. If that market exists - it's already being serviced by someone at a centralized institution that has no counterparty risk.
  • David Johnson is perpetually pitching scams to the community. I'm waiting for the hammer to drop on this guy. There's a good story here, and I can only guess what it is. I'm hoping a decent reporter digs into this case.
  • This is a company who's selling truth tokens, and has a pattern of lying and censoring. This is a scam, and will end badly. I'm sure there's a whole boatload of scandals ahead (something tells me their truthbutt chain will be far more centralized and problematic than they're letting on)
  • It's kind of a great scam. People want to do the right thing - and beat censorship. Plus, they want to make money doing it. Factom sold the community "truth token scamcoins" when Bitcoin has had this ability to do so just fine for years

@cryptonaught- You still think these Factoids are going to be worth very much? Does this appear dishonest to you? (Would the SEC accept this from a publicly traded company?)

I never invested in factoids, and I'm just a programmer, I don't know anything about SEC etc., and frankly I don't have the time to go through everything here (Fo4..). I'm sure others will though so thanks for posting this

@brighton36 As far as factom is concerned, there's a lot that I still can't comment on (was hoping a reporter would do that - but seems like they don't want the story).

I don't understand how there could be a lot you can't comment on unless you have a gag order. But I thank you for an orderly review of your perspective with links. It did take some time to pull it out of you.

I do believe you are correct - some reporter could have fun chasing down the truths in the information you have provided with this post.

Chris, why do you think the media (reporter) that you handed this to are not able to follow up? And why didn't you name him? The implication is that there is a conspiracy to keep you silent.

There's no conspiracy. Mostly just time constraints. Scambustin' is a full time job in this space. Well, that and there's not much money in scam busting.

@brighton36: I'm invested (bought on Polo) and just saw this and I'm absolutely interested in all Facts about Factom. But your argumentation doesn't seem very organized but a wild mix of some justified critics with false accusations, some points are completely irrelevant and it's hard to figure out what is relevant information and what's just your personal interpretation and mis-interpretation to find a way to call Factom a Scam.

The first point for example: Cointerra went bankrupt like many other mining-companies because of the BTC-price. Bad? Sure. Scam? No. Relevant for Factom? No. Or the next "argument": "Paul Snow wasn't terribly active in the movement prior, but claimed to be Bitcoin wealthy on camera once or twice." Really? What's your point? Or the Jimmy Song articles. There is some critic and Paul Snow answered on it in the comment section. But Jimmy Song didn't call Factom a Scam, right? And there is absolutely nothing new.. all articles are old and discussed. Take a look into the comments.

I also know that you already had some discussions in this thread: https://letstalkbitcoin.com/forum/post/so-is-factom-just-a-defacto-scam-now?page=1 ...and obviously it was the same picture. A wild mix of accusations but zero facts to call Factom a scam. In best case justified critics like the miscommunication about Honduras or DBS, but please find a project without any of that. And as far as I know the Honduras-deal isn't dead and with DBS there were some kind of negotiations. And what's obvious is: You're completely missing what Factom is about. You really should read your own sources, like Jimmy Song and Paul Snows replies or the reddit-discussions about Factom. It's very interesting because Paul Snow is obviously very active and open for discussion: https://www.reddit.com/user/PaulSnow

And please.. if you want to call it a Scam, keep focus and find something to call it a scam. If you want to point out critics, please sort relevant from irrelevant. You won't find any project which is perfect but at the moment I don't see much to be critical. Under the line it seems to me as if you are kind of obsessed but not very talented in "Scambustin'" ;-)

@phoenix - The cited lines weren't arguments, they were part of the Timeline. The question of "Why are these two the right people to write this software" should be the first question any investor asks. Apparently, you thought that wasn't relevant. Peter Kirby was a cloud miner - that was an obviously bad business to nearly everyone at the time (and certainly since) and he's not exactly come to Factom on the wings of success.

Jimmy Song did call Factom a Scam in fairly overt words (if not the explicit word "Scam" itself, which he very well may have used).

There's a whole list of facts, and citations in that post. If that list of blunders isn't a solid enough case for you - I can't imagine what it would take. You're a bag-hodlr's Poenix. You bought a bunch of shitcoins, I'm sorry for your loss, but it's clouding your judgement in rationally analyzing this project.

How about we discuss the profit case? Is the value of a factoid entirely the speculative value? If so - how are baghodlrs not the 'customer' of Factom? How much underserviced notarization need have you calculated exists in the realtime (assuming factom even does this) notarization market?

"The cited lines weren't arguments, they were part of the Timeline."

I would agree with that, if there wouldn't be that much of your personal interpretations and accusations and irrelevant informations. But, yes you're right. No arguments.

"The question of "Why are these two the right people to write this software" should be the first question any investor asks. Apparently, you thought that wasn't relevant. Peter Kirby was a cloud miner - that was an obviously bad business to nearly everyone at the time (and certainly since) and he's not exactly come to Factom on the wings of success."

    1. Above you called Cointerra a "mining-scam". Now you agree with what I said. Fixed. ;-)
    2. These two guys are not the only team-members and to ask this question doesn't say anything about the answer. So, please tell me what's the problem with them? Anything else than that Paul Snow has Bitcoins and Peter Kirby "not exactly come to Factom on the wings of success."?

And just for further informations, this is the Factom-team: http://factom.org/team

You say Peter Kirby writes the software... is that right? He isn't mentioned as a Dev.. So you are wrong?

    What's left?

"Jimmy Song did call Factom a Scam in fairly overt words (if not the explicit word "Scam" itself, which he very well may have used)."

Let me understand that: He called Factom a scam without using the word "scam". Did he say "Fraud" or something synonym that indicates fraud?

"There's a whole list of facts, and citations in that post."

Please show me the facts, and I mean facts and not your personal interpretations.

"If that list of blunders isn't a solid enough case for you - I can't imagine what it would take."

If you would delete all that isn't solid your post would be just a few lines about miscommunication and.......... what else? A youtube-video in which they explain how they want to secure data... is what? You want to make PR for them? Or the interview you (that's you, right?) always seem to agree with Paul Snow? What's your point with that?

"You're a bag-hodlr's Poenix. You bought a bunch of shitcoins, I'm sorry for your loss, but it's clouding your judgement in rationally analyzing this project."

I really appreciate your worries, but let me tell you something you'll like. Before I bought I did my research about it. And besides the idea and tech and the economic, I always focus on communication - in Factom mainly on Paul Snow and I really like that he is very active and open and how he replies on questions and critics etc. And: I also found your thread I linked above and my thoughts were: Wow, that guy (you) seems to care about Factom, he is digging deep, nearly like an obsession. What did he find against Factom? Some points they didn't communicate well enough, but absolutely nothing to call it a scam. That was another reason for me to buy.

If you want I can outline all my reasons why I bought into it, and why I believe it's worth an investment. But that would change the direction of this thread... I mean, it's not about making PR for it, right? We want to find reasons to call it a scam or at least a bad investment. ;-)

"How about we discuss the profit case? Is the value of a factoid entirely the speculative value? If so - how are baghodlrs not the 'customer' of Factom? How much underserviced notarization need have you calculated exists in the realtime (assuming factom even does this) notarization market?"

You really believe it's just about notarization? What I learn from this discussion is that I was wrong with my earlier conclusion you were digging deep.

And by the way: Why don't you write your concerns and interpretations and accusations in the official BCT-Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=850070.0

Is it because of the risk somebody could reply?

The latest information they gave there is "GUI should be out soon". What do you think... will they scam before the release or after it?

Because I’m a little bit ill and bored at the moment, I have some time and want to say some things about that chat with Paul Snow.

Some weeks ago, when I did some research about Factom and found this thread: https://letstalkbitcoin.com/forum/post/so-is-factom-just-a-defacto-scam-now?page=1

…I tried to read the Chatlog, but, and I don’t know why: the link didn’t work for me. Yesterday, because of the discussion in this thread (btw.: why there are two threads about the same subject?) I’ve tried it again and finally I could read it. And it was really interesting!

First, to know what has happened it’s enough to quote Paul Snows explanations:

[8/14/15, 7:18:41 PM] junseth: To tell you the truth, I don’t believe for a second that you even got a commitment form Honduras.

    [8/14/15, 7:21:21 PM] Paul Snow: We don't.

[8/14/15, 7:21:49 PM] Paul Snow: They moved it right up to the point of commiting, and ran into political issues.

[8/14/15, 7:23:12 PM] Paul Snow: We were invited to go down and meet with the government in Honduras, and Peter met with people from the President on down. But that isn't the same thing as jumping over the broomstick.

[8/14/15, 7:24:39 PM] Paul Snow: Lastly, we primed a reporter with information about a pending agreement, and the reporter jumped the gun and mangled the message. We discussed that with the folks in Honduras, and they preferred us to let it lie than to try and fix it. It is tough to change a story that gets blasted out and repeated.

    And, important:

[8/14/15, 8:32:20 PM] Paul Snow: And it isn't even fake news. The project is real.. Just not where we would like it to be.

What’s the confusion? Honduras delays the process because of political issues. The story went out too soon. Is that implausible? Delays with governments? What’s more common? And that a story goes out too soon? Paul Snow explains:

[8/14/15, 8:40:44 PM] Paul Snow: Yes, if you go up, you will find that the interview was not supposed to be released. It was prepped for an expected announce that didn't happen.

[8/14/15, 8:41:39 PM] Paul Snow: Actually, most stories are preped and held until the event. Do you really think everyone writes these stories in the moment?

[8/14/15, 8:41:50 PM] Paul Snow: Companies do this

And I can add to this: Stories are very often prepaired, even in sports! Or, press releases about fatalities. Want to see a famous one? In July our (I’m from Germany) Ex-chancellor Helmut Kohl has died: http://www.huffingtonpost.de/2015/07/10/helmut-kohl-gestorben_n_7767902.html

Everybody can take a look at Wikipedia. He’s still alive. The story went out a little bit too soon. Why? The Newspaper says „technical issue“. There was some fun on Twitter about that, like „Helmut Kohl WAS dead!“ ;-)

    But, back to topic…

What the „Chat-Kings“ tried is simple:

    • Imply that Factom would have said that there is a fixed commitment, what they didn’t as far as I can see.

    • Than they tried to push Paul Snow into a direction to admit he lied what he didn’t

    • Tweet that there is no commitment and making a story out of nothing.

Under the line t’s just messing around with words.

    The facts are:

    • Factom works with Honduras on a prototype for land-registry

    And that’s it!

And in fact, that’s also what the Reuters-article says. They quote Peter Kirby:

"Kirby said Factom started negotiations in January. The pilot project should be completed by the end of the year, with the goal of eventually putting all of the government's land titles on the blockchain, he added." http://in.reuters.com/article/2015/05/15/usa-honduras-technology-idINKBN0O01V720150515

He talks about an ongoing process! He doesn’t say there is a contract and everything is ready to start. Even the article isn’t false!

To make a „there is no commitment - story“ out of it, is simply nonsense. And they tried much more… Nothing is enough for the master-brains who did everything to push Paul Snow into a direction he would have something to admit and he would have lied. And obviously it was even to hard to focus on Honduras. There is so much nonsense. It’s a mix of his attempts to explain (what he did and not just once) and personal attacks on him, childish behavior, messing with words and silly accusations. There are even accusations that 16 years old bought into Factom… (impossible for me to understand what they want to say with that)

And the proof for it is a cousin (big LOL):

[8/14/15, 7:39:05 PM] Paul Snow: Of course, what exactly is a lie? Isn't that when you make statements that are not true? Like the idea that Factom was funded with money from 16 year olds? Isn't that a lie? Do you have any actual evidence that 16 year olds actually bought our token?

[8/14/15, 7:43:52 PM] Filip (Niceplum): yeah my 16 year old cousin bought it

And it’s obvious that they don’t want to hear his explanations. They want to say things like this about it:

„This whole thing started because Paul Snow admitted the cover up in a smallish channel.“ (the other thread)

That are two lies in one line („admit“ and „cover up“)

    Or, from the chat:

[8/14/15, 8:00:35 PM] junseth: How about this, I’ll add 1 point to the Paul Snow is honest index if you write an article entitled, “Honduras Government Decides Not to Blockchain Their Land Registry”

That is what these guys want! Read it again! They want him to say, that Honduras decided not to work with Factom! That is really revealing! ;-)

In fact they call Paul Snow a liar while they spread lies! And sure, he can’t just move away, because it’s just unacceptable. So he has to react on it and explain it again and again, because he can be sure, if he would leave these Kids alone they would mess even more with it. So he answers (too kind in my eyes):

[8/14/15, 8:01:35 PM] Paul Snow: They haven't chosen to not use Factom to fix their land registry....

[8/14/15, 8:01:48 PM] Paul Snow: I am still very confident that this project will go through.

[8/14/15, 8:02:07 PM] Paul Snow: But maybe you have never been involved in a government contract before.

But it goes on and on (look at the time-stamp):

[8/14/15, 8:39:53 PM] junseth: And the first sentence is “Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Americas, has agreed to use a Texasbased company to build a permanent and secure land title record system using the underlying technology behind bitcoin, a company official said late Thursday.”

[8/14/15, 8:39:56 PM] Paul Snow: And they are not? That would be news to them.

…..“that would be news TO THEM!“ - I really like hat part! ;-)

Or, this one also shows the intentions:

[8/14/15, 8:45:57 PM] junseth: Paul, I’m going to tweet this: “Well... it has been confirmed by @paulsnx2 that @factomproject does not have commitment form the Honduran government.”

[8/14/15, 8:46:02 PM] junseth: Is that all right with you?

[8/14/15, 8:46:11 PM] junseth: Do you see anything dishonest in that tweet?

But, instantly he figures… that’s not enough, he wants to add „any kind“ to it.

[8/14/15, 8:46:36 PM] junseth: sorry, this: “Well... it has been confirmed by @paulsnx2 that @factomproject does not have any kind of commitment from the Honduran government.”

    Paul Snow answers precise:

    [8/14/15, 8:46:42 PM] Paul Snow: That's fine.

[8/14/15, 8:47:08 PM] Paul Snow: Well "not any kind" isn’t

But… is it really fine? I mean, sure, the information is correct. But they implied something that never was said to give the impression that there is something wrong.

Again, that is what they tried:

[8/14/15, 8:00:35 PM] junseth: How about this, I’ll add 1 point to the Paul Snow is honest index if you write an article entitled, “Honduras Government Decides Not to Blockchain Their Land Registry”

They constantly tried to push him into a direction to make false statements. He constantly tried to explain. For hours!

And under the line it’s this:

[8/14/15, 8:11:21 PM] Paul Snow: So. No lie that you can actually quote, but we are lying because we are talking about what we are doing.

[8/14/15, 8:13:32 PM] Paul Snow: You have demostrated that you an interpret what people say over time, and insert what you want them to have said. Bravo.

[8/14/15, 8:26:23 PM] Paul Snow: If a group tries to do everyting in a transparant fashion, you are ready to hang them for the process of getting to market.

In my eyes, Paul Snow was way too kind. I mean, maybe he has to be it, because he doesn’t just speak for himself but also for Factom. But I think, it would have needed somebody to confront these VIP's with a mirror. What I see is some kind of personal obsession out of psychological compensation in combination with a lot of irrationality. Simple logic seems to be too much. I mean, it would be enough to think about how (ir)rational it would be, out of perspective of Factom, to make up a false story about Honduras and land registry. But sure, they have to handle situations that are not every time ideal, ongoing negotiations, delays, political processes, articles and so on. What does that say? Scam projects doesn’t have those problems. Irrelevant projects doesn’t have those problems. Out of investor-perspective that are all signs that Factom is taken seriously.

And, the good thing is: It wouldn’t be necessary to write this post about it. Like I said, I’m just a little bit bored and have too much time. The tweet and all the accusations didn’t change anything. Somebody linked it in the official thread and the reaction was this:

„In my opinion, just be patient, some governments will use Factom sooner or later, not only Honduras, it's very potential.“

    https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=850070.msg12181732#msg12181732

    But brighton36 still „explains“:

" @junseth confronts factom about the Hondurus deal. Guess what? Never happened. Paul refuses to correct the record, and this fact only goes to light when the chat is published. (Oh btw - also on page 44 of that link is the likely admission that Adam Wagner was paid to astroturf pro-factom articles)"

@brighton36 : Let’s talk a little bit more about this all. I really have some time… You have some other points (you call it facts) that are also interesting. And I really like how mysterious you begin:

„As far as factom is concerned, there's a lot that I still can't comment on (was hoping a reporter would do that - but seems like they don't want the story).“

Sounds as if you have more… but with a gun on your head you’re waiting for Glenn Greenwald. He shouldn’t write that much about Snowden and the NSA but about the "Factom-Mafia"? ;-)

Do you already know that Factom is in the Economist?

„That is why politicians seeking to clean up the Property Institute in Honduras have asked Factom, an American startup, to provide a prototype of a blockchain-based land registry. Interest in the idea has also been expressed in Greece, which has no proper land registry and where only 7% of the territory is adequately mapped.“

    http://www.economist.com/news/briefing/21677228-technology-behind-bitcoin-lets-people-who-do-not-know-or-trust-each-other-build-dependable

And, please don't take this personal. Scambustin' is your hobby and I like that, too. You still have more facts and maybe we'll find something in all your points I will say "Yes, you're right!" and sell all my FCT's. ;-)

"If you can't understand the problem with Factom's statements, you are an incompetent boob. I wish you luck and am sorry for your future loss."

    1. First, thank you for wishing me luck.
    2. Investments are always a risk, I would call it a scam if they would guarantee success.
    3. Maybe I'm incompetent and so on... don't understanding the problem, but I think I made clear what I think about it.

Please, tell me... is this what you would call comeptence:

[8/14/15, 8:00:35 PM] junseth: How about this, I’ll add 1 point to the Paul Snow is honest index if you write an article entitled, “Honduras Government Decides Not to Blockchain Their Land Registry”

Would that be correct? If yes, why? If no, why did you say Paul Snow should write it into an article?
