Proof of sharing? All shares in a day split the days share allocation?

That would be hard to meter and analyze. Plus it would need to be weighted (e.g., pagerank). Someone could spam on all sorts of underused social networks that no one has heard of, those would unlikely drive traffic to the site and shouldn't be weighted the same as someone linking to it on their real Facebook page.

Adam, you've basically spelt out a fantastic ideas in two posts! (Though you have to read your second post in a different context.

    BitTorrent + sharing

Set up a 'private tracker' which has torrents for all of your media. Instead of rewarding seeders with points, you can reward them with LTBcoin. You may be able to offset some of your bandwidth costs this way.

    edit: spelling

I like the idea of awarding people to share a torrent. I could imagine a system where people set up their servers to autoshare the torrent files from their servers and get rewarded with ltbcoin in the process. LTBcoins will be given bases on the amount seeded back to the community.

I met with a guy named Adam who is working on a content distribution side of this that solves a lot of the "proof of distribution" problems you immediately run into once you start walking down that path.   He's local and knows I want to work with him on his project, I see it as a natural extension of what we're doing here.

I wonder if there is anyway you could "mine" a token by downloading the podcast..

Torrent files can be linked to a user account I think. You just need to be logged when you download the file so some extra metadata can be downloaded within the file. A backend system then can monitor the uploads of all files and based on the numbers coins can be split between the seeders.

It's possible to think up of all sorts of interesting ways to calculate how LTBcoin would be awarded to seeders. For example bonus LTBcoin could be awarded whilst seeding a torrent with < 3 seeders, content which is older than a certain age etc.

frostwire has enabled bitcoin tips for torrents. I can speak to the lead dev about incorporating LTBcoins as a donation option. Kind of tricky as to if the seeder should get donations or the show. They will probably need an API, but I can check when coins start flying around here.
