Hi LTB community. As you cryptoheads already probably know by now, ethereum has just launched the crowdsale.

https://www.ethereum.org/

Is anyone going in on this? Are you doing it as a long-term investment or short-term speculation? Just curious about what you all are doing...

Thankyou for the reminder, this looks as if it will drive up the price of BTC as I don't see an exchange where ether can be purchased with fiat.

    Now... where do I dump?

edit: I do have concerns about the following:

    • Components of the network are centralised (in order to maintain the higher transaction speed)
    • They have mentioned that this is version 1 and that v2 & v3 will look completely different
    • They have received quite a lot of investment from VC's who will seek returns that may follow a KYC/AML whitelististing/blacklisting model in order to expand into legitimacy.

I'm legitimately battling with myself to decide whether or not I will contribute. I want to -- because I am genuinely interested in the project and think that it could do amazing things for contract technology.

However, I am also put off by the terms of the sale. There is no cap on the amount of Ether that will be created in the sale with the exception that no individual or group will be allowed to have more than 12.5% of the total Ether generated in the genesis sale. Which means: endless dilution. In this case, if there is too much Ether generated in the sale then it may become more profitable to invest the same amount of money into mining instead -- as the amount of Ether generated each year through mining is going to be a function of the genesis sale.. or so they claim in their presale document.

The other point: The funny thing about successful crowdsales, is that there are no buyers left when the product comes to market because everyone dove in head-first. With no buyers (or at least not enough to drive up or sustain price) early purchasers dump on a thin market and it's a greater fool process from there. Not my cup of tea.

So -- we'll see. No matter what we have 14 days to still obtain the original sale price. I'll be interested to see how much they raise in that timeframe. I would most likely not invest if I could not get at least the original 2000Eth/BTC.

I'll be in for a small amount. Lots of hype on this project, but it's still only a theory. I think Vitalik Buterin is one of the geniuses in the Bitcoin realm, so it will be interesting to see if he can follow through.

Interesting note on the VC. I don't know about the technicalities of KYC/AML or what that means. But I am curious about how the VC investments will be rewarded. Are they allotted ether for their investments? Which allotment is this included in? The crowdsale? The foundation? The founders?

I think this project is too high risk to invest. It has the potential to go places but it has a long and bumpy road ahead.

I have noticed that vitalic does tend to jump from project to project before they are finished.

Why is this the dominant model in crypto crowdsales, a tapering supply that rewards the first funders? Wouldn't it be more fair if everyone received the same amount during the entire crowd sale period? I mean, everyone knows that early adopters in crypto tend to win (or loose) much more than late adopters. But why do project developers view it as necessary to artificially reproduce this early-adopter effect in their crowd funding models?

I'm glad you said something! I'll put some BTC into it, but as I mentioned in another post - the best way to invest in this space is to buy .01 BTC worth of every crowdsale, instead of trying to predict which will work and which won't.

For Ethereum specifically, they are so far behind the curve on other applications, I hope the hype and wait ends up being worth it!

I want to see etherium succeed. I already got myself some and it looks like they are off to a good start.
