  • Re: Introduce yourself!

Just saw this thread at the top, realize I never hopped on it!

My name is Adam. I am a mathematics major and have been a teacher, specifically at the high school level, for the past ten years. I am also an adjunct Calculus professor at the university level and have been a curriculum developer/researcher on the side. Coding, specifically in java/python, has been one of my major hobbies outside of school and is what initially pointed me towards the cryptocurrency space. I have been hooked ever since.

Believe it or not, the logic behind cryptocurrencies has even influenced a lot of my mathematics instruction. For instance I was able to teach hashing functions to my students via the famous "birthday" probability problem (hashing as a function with 365 containers..omitting leap days) to help predict the probability in a room of n people you have the same birthday as someone else...i.e have at least one "container" collision. We then worked out how many containers you would have to have to reduce the collision probability to X which then eventually led towards some conversation about SHA256. The kids had fun with it, but not as much as me. I'm a real geek about this kind of stuff and its keeping me passionate about education!

I love being a part of this community, and am very thankful for all of you! There are not exactly any bitcoin meetups in my community and seemingly no one to have an informed cryptocurrency conversation with around me (without a lot of hand waving and eye rolls). Having the LTB network to listen to updates, and more recently this forum, has been seriously contributing to my sanity!

  • Re: AUDIENCE QUESTION REQUEST: DAMELION of NXT

@dpc The huge concentration of coins in relatively few wallets is fact of life for lots of coins, nxt included. Does he see that as a problem in genereal and/or for nxt? How does he see distribution evening out if at all? What problems if any does he forsee the coin concentration causing for NXT specifically or for cryptos in genereal?

Follow up, can you send me a bunch of NXT?

    Congrats on the rapid progress.

I second this question, especially with the way that NXT is forged.

    @popinjay

Yup I agree, 12 is perfect. If we get only 10 that is fine as well. 14 work too, but 12 is best!

Absolutely. Played in 14 team leagues before and the talent gets pretty thin. I'd say 10 or 12 is best!

  • 1 ether = ???

Yes, I realize the redundancy of a prediction thread with cryptocurrencies, but I am approaching this at a slightly different angle. What will the value of 1 ether eventually be for you? Speculation? Actual use cases?

Personally, I have been looking forward to the crowd sale for quite some time and am really looking forward to playing around with ether and experiment with coding smart contracts and/or sub currencies. So, the value of 1 ether to me is that of being able to actually play in the sandbox and get my hands dirty with this protocol outside of their proof of concept client.

I can't help but get the general feeling that ether is actually undervalued at a current pegging of about $0.30 per ether (right now 0.0005 BTC, eventually 0.0007479 BTC at the end of the crowd sale) but really have no idea what the market will eventually bear when this thing eventually launches. In my nightmare of scenarios, its a failure and we just funded a really cool idea with no actual market for people that want it....like Crystal Clear Pepsi or a Segway. In my wildest of thoughts, ether will be what drives "the internet of things" and be a requirement for development of things we can't even possibly imagine or predict right now.

    What say you?

  • Re: Reading Material

@kyleatlas If you haven't read it already, Outliers by Malcom Gladwell is one of my favorite reads of all time. It's essentially a study of high achievers and what makes them successful. Very doable in the time you will be traveling.

  • Re: LTBc Fantasy Football

Huge football fan here and I love fantasy sports. If this is a thing, please count me in!

  • Re: Ether crowd sale - who's in?

I'm kicking some nominal BTC their way as well. How impressive is it they have almost raised 1500 BTC to this point? And there is still 41 days left to raise funds. I think it is a good sign that a lot of bright people are flocking to this project. I personally have no problem with the way they have been bootstrapped to this point, and think the talented devs deserve compensation for their hard work.

  • Re: Dogeparty! Counterparty on the Doge Blockchain! Proof of Burn? Or Proof of Charity?

@adam Thank you for your hard work! I love how Counterparty used proof of burn and think it was a very clever solution. However, like you mentioned, I too have always been troubled by all that value wasted that could have gone towards other uses.

Therefore, I instantly gravitate towards your proof of charity solution. However, I was going through the reddit thread and read a comment from what appears to be a reference client dev "rnicoll" that is an interesting counterargument...I will paraphrase below:

...However... I'm going to be contrary and say I think Proof of Burn is a better idea universally. Proof of Charity effectively means having your cake and eating it; the coins are spent but also still exist, and new coins exist representing their old value. Proof of Burn is a much more elegant solution where the value is destroyed and created, rather than risking dilution.

I personally don't view dilution as a bad thing with something like Dogecoin, where some 100,000,000,000 will be in existence. I mean, what is burning 1,000,000,000 really going to help with there will be so many more left? I am just curious if you actually view dilution as a valid argument against the proof of charity idea?

  • Re: Answers to the LTB Bitcoin Blockchain Scavenger Hunt Trivia Contest

Thanks @jratcliff63367 for putting on the game! I didn't necessarily work through the two days straight, I don't have that kind of stamina anymore. However, I did put in some serious evening couch time. I would say that of all the clues, the toughest for me were #5, #9, and #10. All the rest I solved without "extensive googling" to find the answers. Actually, the exact phrases needed for #5 and #9 I found on Wikipedia plot summaries, of all places!!

The last one I did have "midnight" yesterday as an attempt, but when it didn't work I went other directions such as the famous tunnel scenes from movies like 'The Great Escape' and 'Perks of Being a Wallflower'. Today's helper clue meant to go back to that movie and I got it right away.

I really enjoyed this puzzle, and actually learned a lot from the experience. These blockchain brainwallet puzzles are very addicting and entertaining, but also very educational. Along the way I learned a lot from my mistakes and even had some movies cross my radar that I have never seen in the past. I think you may have mentioned this on the podcast, but many of the clues had a lot of directions you could have gone off into for the right answer. For instance, the "randy doctor" clue could have went to a movie "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" with the plot surrounding a promiscuous doctor. Or, the "alien movie bombing at the box office" could have been about Battlefield Earth as well. I think it would be cool to try a choose your own adventure style where people that get 'wrong' answers still get some reward or even leave behind some reward for someone who may have made the same mistake as them.

Finally, on a funny note, I think I might be on some kind of a list after solving the clue #9 ("Where did the randy doctor meet his wife") and googling several iteraitons of "randy doctor". The types of movies at the end of that search weren't exactly the type I needed for this puzzle!

  • Re: UTipdMe - A Cost-effective Tipping Solution for LTBcoin

@belltown TL;DR UTipdMe does use the blockchain. It manages a ledger of debits and credits where tipping just debits an user account and credits the receiver.
