Yes, I realize the redundancy of a prediction thread with cryptocurrencies, but I am approaching this at a slightly different angle. What will the value of 1 ether eventually be for you? Speculation? Actual use cases?

Personally, I have been looking forward to the crowd sale for quite some time and am really looking forward to playing around with ether and experiment with coding smart contracts and/or sub currencies. So, the value of 1 ether to me is that of being able to actually play in the sandbox and get my hands dirty with this protocol outside of their proof of concept client.

I can't help but get the general feeling that ether is actually undervalued at a current pegging of about $0.30 per ether (right now 0.0005 BTC, eventually 0.0007479 BTC at the end of the crowd sale) but really have no idea what the market will eventually bear when this thing eventually launches. In my nightmare of scenarios, its a failure and we just funded a really cool idea with no actual market for people that want it....like Crystal Clear Pepsi or a Segway. In my wildest of thoughts, ether will be what drives "the internet of things" and be a requirement for development of things we can't even possibly imagine or predict right now.

What say you?

While the Segway is kindof a fail, the technology behind it is truly revolutionary. Motorized Self-Balancing Unicycles and Motorcycles already exist on the market and they surpass the Segway in almost all aspects.

Maybe Etherium fails, but the ideas might well live on and grow slowly until the value proposition becomes more palatable.

Unknown quantity, Unknown utility, Unknown product,
    Unknown timeline.

I bought a bit, because why not. But I guess the value will be less than the current market price. The valuation model is nothing like bitcoin or other coins. The value of things like safecoin, storj, and ether is totally unknown because there isn't anything like them yet. I am personally more excited about these projects (not storj) than bitcoin, but that doesn't translate to the tokens value. Too many unknown moving parts. So even if ethereum becomes the world dominating product there is still a chance that each ether token won't be worth that much.

Pretending to have knowledge is far more dangerous than ignorance.

Also, you can currently play on a testnet with test either. You can also mine test either.

Can ether be divided just like bitcoin can be expressed in units of 0.00000001 ? I was just thinking about what the minimum amount of ether to execute a contract could potentially be or if it would have to be a minimum of 1 ETH.

    Neverming, found it

The basic unit of the currency is called ether, which is divided into smaller units of currency called finney, szabo, shannon, babbage, lovelace, and wei.[2] Each smaller unit is equal to 0.001 of the next higher unit, so a finney is 0.001 ether, a szabo is 0.001 finney, and so on.

Any ideas for smart contracts? The most well thought I've seen are related to reputation and government safety catch systems. Arguably very important, but these app types are currently being sought after in other platforms like Open Bazaar or could be developed in other platforms. Speaking of other platforms, BlackHalo lays the claim that they're the first to implement smart contracts.

The intellect on the Ethereum team is striking, but it looks like their focus is on the platform itself not the project. Right now, there are so many similar projects being worked on with different teams and progressions, that it's hard to compare. Note: I currently don't have any blackcoins or have pre-bought any ether, so I have no stake in trying to upsell one or the other.

Very good points. With smart contracts, I am most interested in self-executing contracts that are realized when a condition is met. Take for example, an independent contractor whose current work flow consists of way too much time trying to prove to a central authority (boss) that they completed their work and then has to wait net 30 or net 60 to get paid. I am excited for applications that solve problems like this by automation and logic, hence platforms like ethereum.

The price per ether really has nothing to do with it as they are basing the economics of the rest of the distribution off of. The number you should really pay attention to is the market cap IMHO. I believe the market cap is currenty ~$4.7M at 2k/btc. I think its worth more than that, but I am hesitant as most of these types of crowdfunding efforts crash afterwards as there arent that many buyers left in the market. Although now that people know that pattern, they may wait.

Tldr; I have no idea, I will probably buy some at the 2k/btc price

I'm buying some, but I think with the ether supply set to double in the first year of existence we will probably see a decrease in the ether price due to miner distribution.

That said, this type of innovation needs to be supported and I'm happy to help. Even if the ether are worth nothing in the future, some of the ideas generated by the project will positively impact society.
