Let me preface with what I'm going to say with this: Ethereum is an incredible idea and we can't yet weigh the implications of what it will become and its future value. If nothing else, buying Ether is investing in the future.
From an investment point of view though, look at how many millions of Ether will be produced each year - I think the inflation rate starts at 25% and then decreases slightly each year? Sorry I don't have the exact numbers anymore, but when I was looking at the numbers, the part that struck me, was "How is Ether going to keep up with a rising BTC price?" We are looking at BTC valuations in the 10's of thousands of dollars, more than likely. How will Ether keep up? I can't come up with an answer from within the known, at least within our event horizon in the next few years. Many years from now, anything is possible, but I have a feeling we will have many opportunities to buy Ether quite a bit cheaper than the "IPO" prices.
