Goal: to establish a physical sanctuary and intentional community located in international waters for individuals committed to:

  • Environmental and marine stewardship
  • True democratic governance (one person one vote) with a modified consensus (decentralized) decision-making process.
  • Individual freedom and autonomy
  • Cryptography development and activity

Location: there are over 4000 oil platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico, alone, that will be decommissioned over the next couple decades. Often, these platforms are available for sale and occupation for adventurous individuals. One such platform was sold in 2010 for $85,000.00 and retrofitted for residential use for $100,000. Other oil platforms, former defense/research facilities, and other marine structures can be found throughout the world, many of which can be purchased and occupied for residential and commercial purposes with significant upgrades (depending on the owner's standards).

Objectives: The overall objective is to purchase such a platform or structure and retrofit it for community member use. We will also acquire a suitable vessel to shuttle people and resources.

Objective 1: 1000 FOUNDER tokens have been created on the Counterparty platform. They are locked (no additional tokens are possible) and cannot be divided into units less than 1.0. They can be traded. These tokens will be sold for 1.0 BTC. As the original "benefactor", I am reserving one of these FOUNDER tokens to be auctioned off at a future date on the LTB auction site.

The holders of FOUNDER tokens will have lifetime "Citizenship" in each physical sanctuary that is created. More importantly, it will be the FOUNDERs that develop the policies, procedures, etc. consistent with the above-mentioned Goals that govern how the Sanctuaries are initially operated, including whether additional individuals are invited to participate at a later date and how that participation would take place.

FOUNDERs will jointly decide how funds raised will be invested and used; how additional funds will be raised; what properties/assets will be purchased, etc. Multiple tokens can be held by a single individual, but each individual will have only one vote.

Those FOUNDERs that exist on 1/1/2015 will determine the name of this adventure and make related initial decisions (e.g. Whether to establish a legal entity such as a non-profit corporation).

In the meantime, I am looking for other motivated individuals to whom this idea "speaks" and who are interested in getting it off the ground. Ten FOUNDER tokens are being reserved for individuals who make substantial contributions in this regard during this critical time.

The FOUNDER tokens have been created in a new wallet that will be used exclusively for this purpose. We will pursue multisig type authority once it is available.

About me: A long time ago, I worked in the commercial diving (underwater construction) industry. I still have useful ties to that and related maritime industries. Currently, I am an attorney that used to practice pro-environmental law in the non-profit sector. I am now a member of a rural intentional community on 160 acres. I am interested in diving (pun intended) into both maritime and crypto-related law to facilitate this and other projects.

This sounds like a dream. It is. But, it is one made possible by cryptography, the blockchain, Counterparty, and you!

Join me on this adventure!

An intentional seasteading community? I'm with you, hubby!

Disclosure: we're married (if you hadn't already guessed).

    @kerneloops

    Great input. Thank you.

The inspiration for the idea comes for a variety of sources, including seasteading, sea gypsies, sea shepherd society, sealand, and an article I read about a guy who lives on an oil platform.

The "meta" goal would be to obtain a structure and use it as a retreat for "members". I think the first goal would be to obtain a adequate sized sea-going vessel with the capacity to travel around the world. My father is a licensed captain operating out of the Florida keys and I am pursuing my captains license among other related things.

I am staying open to how others who join want to shape the effort, though. The "kernel" of the idea though is to obtain the capacity for us to temporarily retreat to international waters for the fun and novelty of it, if nothing else. Perhaps each of us would not have the resources to do it alone, but these crypto related technologies now give us the opportunity to try it together p2p.

I consider my original post the unformed thought before the draft of a possible white paper. So, very early stages. Much more to come, sooner if other interested parties wish to join and help develop.

Interesting project. I would definitely pitch in if I had some spare coin :p

I was actually involved with the whole Sealand thing (was part of the core group) back in the day when The Pirate Bay was going to purchase it. Once the deal fell through and sealand refused to sell [to pirates], the group split off and we created something called the FreeNation Foundation. At that point we had plans to raise a bunch of money to straight up buy a whole island. I think we raised only like a couple hundred bucks in donations or something. Then a few months later it just sort of died off. Was fun though :)

That's very cool. Sounds like you have some valuable experience.

It bears repeating that I think the whole crowdfunding space that now exists makes ideas like this much more possible, where it was dubious and tedious before.

And there are other efforts we could piggy-back on. Maybe we don't buy our own "island", but space on another like that free enterprise project off the coast of California, or just a big ass ship that travels the world (the Bit Ship?).

Lots of possibilities with ongoing fundraising/entrepreneurial offshoots to enable it to be long term.

Just learned about seasteading a few weeks ago. I am very interested in this project!

O.K. Here's the state of my thinking over the last 24 hours on the structure of the project (for any one who gives a damn ;-)

I will form a cooperative under state law. The cooperative would own the assets. Each FOUNDER would become a lifetime member of the cooperative. The initial FOUNDERs would have the right to assist in developing the starting scope of the project, including name, the Bylaws (which would include the ongoing rights of the members), etc. they would then have the benefit of the assets (e.g. Vessel, oil platform, etc.).

A smart move would be to create other classes of membership that would be available at a later time. For example, there could be level of annual membership represented by a token at a significantly reduced cost. But, I digress.

By using the co-op model, we can avoid the token falling into the category of a security. Still researching this.

Also, thinking that I might make a special token for the first person to pony up, buy a token and take the leap with me. There would only be one ADMIRAL token and it would entitle the holder to some cool exclusives, such as name on the bridge of the vessel or platform.

    Anyone care to weigh in?

Slowly, but surely, adding elements to this "crypto nomads" concept. The newest is an effort to remove risk for early adopters. To wit: fully refundable FOUNDER token up to the date of purchase of the "freedom" space (vessel/platform).

Anyone want to help with a simple web page and t-shirt design?

I listened to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast about sea-steading a few weeks ago, here is a link to the podcast with guest Joe Quirk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpBLqm2nYf8 It inspired my to look into it further. I learned that Patri Friedman the great grandson of the great economist Milton Friedman was at Burning Man where he visualized 10,000 burningmans on the ocean. Patri wrote about it on his blog which was read by the famed VC Peter Thiel who then contacted Patri and asked him if a million and a half dollars would help get him started. And that was the beginning of the Sea Steading Institute. I also learned that you must be 200 miles off the coast of a continent to be outside the jurisdiction of the nearest land based government. Does this mean an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico would put you under the jurisdiction of Texas? Let us know your progress... I think its an incredible adventure in the making.

Great post, Ty! I've got a two bout drive ahead of me and will listen to that podcast. Thanks again.

Yes, 200 miles gets you into international waters and freedom from "state" control. However, the freedom starts to appear in differing respects 3 and 12 miles out as well. I am putting together a primer.

2/3 of the planet is water, as you know. Consequently, there are other aspects to freedom that can be acquired simply by being out in that vastness where few (relatively) other people have the ability to travel.

If there is autonomy to be found in the world as it currently exists, it is on the water. Whether on a fixed space, a decent sized vessel, or, preferably, both.
