Re: Local Currencies?
@deweller User-generated or local currencies is one of the functions of meta-coin protocols such as counterparty, mastercoin and others.Ripple can also do this and has a fully functioning distributed exchange for trading one currency for another.
There is, of course, a big difference between "user-generated" and "local currencies". It's much easier to form a community around a user-generated currency/coin/token like LTBcoin when it isn't tied to a specific geographic location (e.g. is online). The pool of supporters/users is unbounded (e.g. see the various non-english threads in the LTB forum). I say "much easier" comparatively, not to suggest that it is an easy endeavor itself.
The problem with local currencies is finding support among a fixed population, which, depending on it's cultural traditions, may welcome local hard currency proposals, or may not; may welcome technological innovation or may not. I think it is a fascinating topic worthy of more thought and discussion.
I actually came to the Bitcoin space through the local currency space. They both are alternatives to a destructive system. Getting Bitcoin adopted locally, however, has been a challenge because of the technological barrier. You can still hold an "Ithaca Hour" currency. People are skeptical of digital currency they can't hold in their hands, even if they agree with all the other aspects that make it a superior form of value transfer.

Re: New Article : Bitcoin Suspected to Be NSA or CIA Project
In this weeks Bitcoins and Gravy there was a discussion about the anti-big-bank political commentary inserted into the block chain by whoever has/had control over the wallet associated with Satoshi.
IMO, if BTC were a CIA creation, they wouldn't think or care to go that far. Not saying its definitive proof, or anything close. But, I'm a big fan of Okam's Razor theory and the block chain commentary supports the simple explanation rather than the more elaborate CIA conspiracy theory.

Dimitry Orlov and his view of crypto and it's role in a national collapse scenario. For example, would it have made a difference in the Soviet Union, and, if a semblance of the grid remains in a post-economic collapse USA, what role could it play?
- Is BTC the global equivalent of local currency movement (e.g. Ithaca hours)? They are spatially different, but don't they compliment each other in many ways such that they could form an alternative system?
Edit: corrected name of Ithaca currency

Re: What's your Favorite Show on the LTB Network? Why?
Let's Talk Bitcoin continues to be my favorite, particularly when the three hosts are together and wax philosophical about the state of affairs, current news, and the role of crypto. They each have unique perspectives that mesh well.
Second favorite, Bitcoins and Gravy.

Giving props to you folks for a really pleasant interface. Both on my iPhone and laptop, the site is elegant and easy to navigate. Not just blowing smoke, I'm very impressed with what you are creating.

Re: In one year, what do you speculate the price of Bitcoin to be?
+1 to complexity="who knows".
I want it to be $2000 and believe it can and will have a very rapid and significant jump once people wake up, but who knows when that will be?

Re: Richard Boase and his Kenya Experiance
I thought the interview was refreshing. Too many people in similar situations try to sugar coat their success to please supporters, funders, granting institutions. As a result, the same naive mistakes get made.
It was also interesting to hear the point about value and volatility. Hardware is expensive while wages are low. The smart move is to sell donated hardware to put food on the table. And, we can't expect low income individuals to invest in a technology whose volatility could wipe them out.
I agree with the posts that we need to focus on the technology, keeping the 6 billion in mind, and make it possible for everyone to adopt it when it's right for them.
