Hi Tom.  Thanks for your thoughts.  My response is below.

@Adam started this thread with specific direction:  create a platform that allows for Ideas to be proposed, reviewed, promoted and executed.

Yep.  It was a high level task.  Make a platform like http://helpmewrite.co/ that serves the purposes of the ltb network
I believe our job as a community is to think it all the way through and propose a spec.
In thinking it through, I believe the best way to serve the LTB network is to make a kickstarter-like platform for content ideas.

it looks this thread is attempting to reformulate the original direction with counter or alternate proposals.  That's not say that, @deweller, that the discussion here bears no value; it does.  But first I would like to get my initial question cleared up before addressing other ideas raised here.
I believe what I am proposing is very in the spirit of what Adam wants and what we all want.

I am making the argument that the content producers should be the focus of the project and not the idea proposers.  I believe that is also the spirit of http://helpmewrite.co/.  Their home page instructions say "Add ideas you want to write about" (emphasis mine).
So, creators get tips (funding) from the audience (backers).  This is a crowdfunding/kickstarter model.
Am I changing the spirit and purpose of the project?  No.  I don't believe so.

Am I proposing to change the direction of the project a little bit?  Yes.  I believe that is what we should be doing as a community.  A valuable community can provide direction and well thought-out ideas.
I believe if this LTB network is going to work, it is going to take a community of thinkers, leaders and doers.
I believe we serve the network and Adam the best when we take ideas and run with them, even if they evolve along the way to something slightly different.
Adam serves a critical role as a high level leader.  But ultimately, if this is going to work, this must be OUR network, not Adam's network.  We are all stakeholders here.  And if I understand his vision correctly, I think that is exactly what Adam wants.

I could see an argument either way.  Let's make all the things!
But, the question is, which one first:
Do we want a kickstarter-like platform for content producers first?  Or do we want a "User Voice"-esque platform for the audience to provide direction first?
    What say you, community?!

I finally got counterpartyd compiled and running in a VM.  It was non-trivial!
Since blockscan only works on the live net (not testnet), I will need to test this with live assets.
I couldn't find a live counterparty wallet.  What do you use for a counterparty wallet on the live bitcoin network?  Is counterpartyd the only interface right now?  Is there a counterwallet for the live network?

[EDIT] Just found https://github.com/JahPowerBit/BoottleXCP - I'm going to try that next.

  • Re: Two-sided referral bonus

Thanks for the shout, but Adam deserves any credit for the proof-of-tip idea.
The LTBcoin bonus for a referral sounds like a good idea to me.  It seems like a natural way to grow membership of the network.
This is something that will need to be embedded into the LTB content platform that is being built.  I expect the developer will have a long list of features to add.

  • Re: Project Needing Developers: Clone of http://helpmewrite.co/ powered by LTBcoin

    Cool.
I totally agree that we should separate the idea-generation platform (think User Voice) from the content-bounty platform (think Kickstarter).
I'm of the opinion that the crowdfunding/content-bounty platform is the one that should be developed first.  And then the idea generation platform comes later to support it.

I think LTBcoin is still relevant for content bounty payments.  I want LTBcoin to have as much utility as possible and this gives the audience one more thing to spend LTBcoin on.
If the crowdfunding platform grows, then I can see a phase 2 development cycle where it expands beyond  taking LTBcoin as payment.  I really like the idea of a crowdfunding site that pays early investors a share of the profits.  That idea is definitely going to happen somewhere, if not here!

rotalumis said:The idea as I understand it is to create a marketplace where anyone can propose a topic they are interested in learning more about and then have experts come in and fulfill the request if it is popular enough.

Yep.  I understand that is how this thread started.  And while that idea has merits, I don't think it will work.
I think it is too problematic to have the person that suggests an idea be completely separate from the person who is responsible for bringing it to life.  I think it is problematic philosophically and technically.
    Philosophical Problem
Generally speaking, ideas take little effort to generate and have little value.  By comparison, produced content takes a lot of effort and has high value.
In other works, the value is in the execution, not in the idea.  By rewarding the person who proposes the idea, the system places a high value on ideas.  I think that is incorrect.  We should reward the executors as much as possible and not those who are generating ideas.
    Technical Problem

I believe matching ideas to produced content is problematic.  Ideas could be partially filled by content.  One piece of content could fill multiple ideas.
Consider complex ideas, like a short story, or a short film.  I think what will happen often is that an idea creator has an idea, and then it is fulfilled by a content producer.  Then the idea creator sees it and says "Hey - this wasn't my idea at all!  What I meant was...".

But what about the Idea People
There is a place for those who just have ideas.  These forums are a great place.  Ideas can be discussed freely, and very likely content producers may take a their queues from ideas here.
But I believe that idea discussion should be free-form and not rewarded based on someone else's hard work in producing the content.

    Summary
I propose we keep it simple with a more kickstarter-like model. The same person who proposes the idea should be the one who creates it.We should reward the hard work of content production and not the relatively easy work of thinking up ideas.

  • Re: Project Needing Developers: Clone of http://helpmewrite.co/ powered by LTBcoin

After chewing on it for a while, I can't shake the feeling that the person proposing the idea should be the one responsible for bringing it to life.
As a result, I suggest the following:Let's follow a model more like kickstarter Content creators (or team runners) propose ideas that they will create themselves.  If it is your idea, you are responsible for creating it.Each idea has a minimum amount, a fundraising cutoff date and a content delivery dateIf the idea is funded by the cutoff date, then the content producer is committed to produce it (if he/she has not already) and will get paid the full amount on delivery. After the content is produced, a significant percentage (50% ?) of LTBcoin income is split amongst all the backers.Backers who contribute early get a higher percentage.  This promotes good curation and idea discovery.
I like this approach because it feels a little simpler and easier to understand.
    Please share your thoughts.

    Ahh. I get it.  Sweet.
Here is one for PHP and Ruby as well:
    https://github.com/prusnak/addrgen
So all we need is a master public key.  And we can generate wallet addresses without bitcoind.  Nice.

Counterparty addresses are bitcoin addresses. I thought about using the blockchain.info Receive Address API for this but the amount of bitcoin sent during the XCP transaction is below their minimum threshold. You'd probably be better off using a deterministic wallet to create new receiving addresses.

You could then use Blockscan.com's API to monitor the LTBCOINSEAT balance at each created sending address to trigger sending the invite email.

Ah - good find on blockscan.com.  We could save a lot of effort if we don't need to run our own bitcoind and counterpartyd daemons.
Can you elaborate on this a little bit more?
using a deterministic wallet to create new receiving addresses
Is there a simple way to generate bitcoin addresses without having to run bitcoind?

If you've already got a project started in something else, I wouldn't mind running with that. I'm pretty flexible.

I haven't written any code yet.  I did compile and run counterpartyd on an Amazon instance.
I'm most productive developing in PHP.  And I find Go the most interesting right now.  Any strong feelings on either of those two languages?
