Hey all, I know there's been a ton of just plain stupid rumors about bitcoin, I'm wondering what the worst one you've heard/read was.

I'm not sure, two come to mind;
In 2011 when the Bitcoin Price dropped from $30 to almost zero there was a rumor that Bitcoin was dead.
The other was in 2013 when Silk Road got busted there was a rumor that Bitcoin was dead.

First of all, I had this Money and Banking class at the beginning of the summer and was surprised that we spent a good 15-30 mins discussing the characteristics of Bitcoin in regards to traditional economic definitions of money. Of course, I was pretty excited and tried to bring an informed dialogue to the conversation, but there was this guy behind me making definitely uninformed comments about it. More or less, he was claiming that the person who invented Bitcoin also created the Silk Road and that they were all in jail and total "losers". Lol

I find it hilarious when people try to sound like they know what they're talking about in regards to how bitcoin is some sort of Ponzi scheme. Not only does it prove that they do not know what a Ponzi scheme really is but also that they are just summarizing the click bait article they read on business insider.
I think a lot of the misinformation propagates through individuals who feel smart in saying that they have identified an obvious scam and are therefore smart by not pursuing it further. In fact, pursuing it further beyond what they have initially read is viewed as admitting to either themselves or others that they are wrong so they they would rather stick to what they "know" than find out what is true.
It's win win for them in the future because if it turned out to be a scam, they can say how they were smart enough to stay away. If it sky rockets in value they can tell people how they knew about it before everyone else but leave out the part where they were 100% against it.

Here's one; Bitcoin was started by the CIA so they could easily send money to their agents overseas.
