What does Google think about Bitcoin?

Ask their search engine the price and you shall receive.

I'd also suggest an internet search of "Assange Schmidt dinner" and search for "bitcoin" in the relevant article text. Interesting.

I'd classify Google as a moderately interested participant in blockchain technologies. Google ventures has invested in Ripple Labs since they're interested in the payments aspect.

I would be more impressed if Google Wallet would include bitcoin storage, purchases, payments, etc. I would be willing to close my PayPal account of 15 years if Google would offer BTC integration. Until then they're just dunking their toes in the water.

They've shown no aggression on the Play Store and the search integration basically means they aren't against it. Plus there were rumours of them intergrating Bitcoin into Google Wallet...

I'd speculate that something is in the works for sure!

It doesn't seem like they're adverse to it. They just added support to search for a bitcoin quote directly into the search engine without having to click a link. They usually are open to pretty much everything unless it's clearly something that is not of interest. A lot of people that work for Google are probably following/own bitcoin personally as well.

Google is known to be behind the open source culture whenever it can. It sure must make profit and compete with others, but when having choice they more often choose open source (android, chrome and "google summer of code" are just a few examples).

Google Ventures is one of the big seeds behind Gyft.

Google asked for feedback how they could/should use bitcoin: https://www.google.com/moderator/#16/e=20e106

I even think that they would jump immediately on bitcoin to save decentralization if any big company created a FacebookCoin or AmazonCoin. As long as it does not happen they have some time developing the best ideas how to use it in a safe and easy way.

Here you can read what the individual opinions of some google employees are: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/262kye/chrome_team_here_heres_what_happened_with

If google was against bitcoin, they would tell these people to not express their opinions in a thread where it is about chrome/google and bitcoin.

Finally Eric Schmidt might not have understood the full potential of bitcoin back in the days when Assange told him, like many of us did not at that time, but it seems pretty sure that he has now. Not the best article on that but still: http://newsbtc.com/2014/03/16/google-chairman-eric-schmidt-bitcoin-architecture-amazing-advancement/

I've got a bet going regarding Google and Bitcoin on BetMoose and certainly feel like they are believers in Bitcoin but we haven't seen anything to say they will integrate it in Google products... yet.

    Hi @bitsol,

When a "malware developer hoping to steal bitcoin keys copied the kryptokit extension codebase in order to build their own malicious extension" [1]. The Google Chrome team took care of it and a member of the team, http://www.reddit.com/user/TylerChrome went so far as to "unofficially" post an explanation in the Bitcoin sub reddit. [1] http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/262kye/chrome_team_here_heres_what_happened_with/ Also, additional comments like these, by a Google Chrome Product Manager seemed to be in favor of Bitcoin: "We noticed the conversation on /r/bitcoin (many of us are enthusiasts, too!) and realized what had taken place. The krypto-kit extension was restored and re-enabled on users machines." - u/TylerChrome "All day every day. :) Loving the price jump!" - u/TylerChrome "It's reasonable to be skeptical. Over time I hope our commitment to the developer community will win you over." - u/TylerChrome

u/TylerChrome seems to legitimately be on the Chrome project team and offered this link and a post in the Chromium Project page speaking directly to the http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/ community as additional assurance. http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=375505

I didn't know about any of this. Thanks!

All that is kind of fluffy in comparison to what companies like Overstock are doing for the community. I'll be much more impressed when Google accepts BTC payments or adds BTC features to Google Wallet.
