For people who have no knowledge of the topic, I often start with the concept that bitcoin is like a ledger stored upon multiple computers.
The term "mining" I think is horrible for explaining, I explain that mIners keep track of the ledger so that they all agree, and for doing so they get rewarded in bitcoin.
