Before I start to go into details what it is I'm looking for you should take a quick peek at this phone:

Philips W6610/18, Image of the Device

Here's my specifications:

I need a decent android phone that I can use to share my internet connection with my tablet, use mycelium to pay for stuff in bitcoin, make calls and surf the web.

It needs to be usable with the swedish carriers:

It needs to have proper language support:

  • It needs to support English.
  • It would be nice if it also supported Swedish.
  • It would be awesome if it also supported Esperanto.

It needs to support my software:

  • Needs to support the mycelium android wallet.
  • Needs to have a decent HTML5 enabled browser.

It needs to have a decent display:

  • Maximum of 5.5 inch screen.
  • Preferably between 2.5 inc and 4.0 inch.

It needs to have a decent battery capaity:

  • Minimum of 4000 mAh.
  • Preferably over 5000 mAh.
  • It would be awesome if it was removable.

It needs to have a camera:

  • Minimum of a back-facing camera with autofocus.
  • Preferably no front-facing camera at all.

It needs to have support for bluetooth:

  • Minimum bluetooth2 with A2DP.
  • Preferably bluetooth4 with A2DP.

It would be great if it also had various other stuff:

  • Support for NFC and in partiular my MiFare Classic tags.
  • Support for GPS and the faster it gets a fix, the better.

If I end up buying based on a recommendation here I will decide how satisfied I am with my purchase and send LTBc to the first one to make the recommendation; 1,000 at least and 10,000 at most.

To be clear, the Philips W6610/18 is my suggestion and that's what I'm looking at at the moment. I'm hoping someone else knows of a better phone that matches my specifications though.

I've used a Samsung S4 for half a year or so now and it's been a frustrating experience since I've been going from the best phone ever to the successor of the best phone ever (a downgrade in my opinon) then over to what the mainstream consider a "flagship" phone. To me, that phone is, sadly, utter crap.

5 inch screen is to me uncomfortably big, even though I have rather big hands. I have a tablet to accompany my phone and use it for gaming and video - my phone is mainly used to pay for stuff with bitcoin, listen to podcasts and share internet to the tablet.

I'd love to do treasure hunts with GPS and coinding/geocaching but every single phone I've ever had just runs out of juice halfway through.

@kerneloops But, they are tools, so I guess they don't have to be exciting...

That's the main issue here. To me, the phone is without a shed of doubt no more than a tool. I need my tool working and doing what I tell it to.

The N900 excelled in this, I could tell it practically anything and it obeyed to the best of it's ability. If it weren't for the fact that I've gotten to love the Mycelium bitcoin wallet for android I would've looked for an old N900 and simply gone back to it. After all, it worked. Sadly, the community behind it died out about as fast as the poorly concieved USB connector failed and the devices stopped charging.

I've looked long and good at the Neo N900 but it seems like they won't be able to get the job done, and definately not in time for me to get my new phone considering I'm currently on a temporary phone since the Samsung finally offed itself and let me move on with my life.

Considering my use case I've also looked into getting a smartwatch and just skip the phone but that turned out to be an overly expensive venture. Maybe I'll look again in 5-10 years.

@kerneloops And, what's your take an Jolla?

their other half concept has promise that they've continously failed to deliver on. Give me an other half with keyboard and another other half with extra battery and a solar charger and I'll consider it. The N9 operating system lived up to my high expectations and surpassed even the N9, but the lack of keyboard changed my habits, I stopped chatting for example.

The sailfish design is a bit too much out there but.. proper other halves, a terminal, ability to run mycelium through their android support layer and.. well.. heck, why not. I'd take one I guess.

Just a little note here: The display being by FAR the biggest energy consumer in the phone, I would make the battery capacity dependent of the screen size.

True. I'll look at the mAh/inch of screen to see what good ratios are.

I would really like to go back to having a phone that lasts for a full day or more, but alas I have given in like most everyone else and currently enjoy my Google Nexus 5, embedded battery and all. The battery life is mediocre and I find myself carrying an external battery charger with me in order to keep through a heavy day of use.

If you're willing to carry a tablet with you for other tasks, then bringing along an external battery charger doesn't seem like the worst choice.

@kerneloops - I hear you. My first phone - a Nokia 5190 - lasted about a week on standby and a few hours of talk time. Of course it didn't have any features and if I actually used it for a lot of calls it would have been an arm and a leg, but still - it feels much like we've regressed since that time.

Why a compact 5000mah battery is so hard to produce, I have no idea.

It's not hard. It's a design choice and the mobile industry decided to compete in thinness, rather than utility, The asian market have had 3000-5000 mAh devices as part of their standard sortiment for years.
