Investment strategies with the long term in mind

I think this all depends on how much effort you are willing or are able to put in on a daily basis. Holding onto some BTC will surely be a good investment in the long term, but when you can buy a particular miner that will pay itself off in about 45 days, then you have made profit already. This profit can be used to reinvest into more hardware, which will get you the next set of hardware in a little more than half the time it did for the first piece of hardware (taking into account difficulty rate). Now, some mining hardware may take much longer to pay off, so getting the right miners, at the right price, and at the right power efficiency is key. On top of that, miners can still be sold! Buying a miner, mining for two weeks, then selling the miner for nearly as much as it was bought for would bring in profit. This is something that I have been doing for quite some time. I started by investing $450 into some equipment, profited in BTC, reinvested into new hardware, and now I'm at about $2000 in hardware and a decent profit every month. This has taken a lot of effort, research, and stress, but it's possible.

@Spengler My job is "unskilled" and I would say I'm just muddling my way through life. I find joy when I discover intriguing things.

I'm not sure I understand the second part of your post. Were you hoping for a response on this part from me?

Just trying to get a feel of the community that's starting to build here. One quote I'm reminded of is "not all who wander are lost." In current society where most of my "driven" cohorts went to business school to become i-bankers/manage hedge funds and "driven" engineers went to work for "private" corporations like Boeing and Lockheed Martin from government contracts, muddling may sound like just the place to be :]

One fairly popular theory for high risk, high reward situations is to bet a little bit on everything. This way you are sure to hit the big winners. The risk of missing the winner(s) is worse than the expected loss of betting on everything.

I personally don't do that because it would take way too much time.

I think it is like this in crypto-wourld.

BTC - first level, very safe, invest in this and you get a little bit of other cryptos. Coins 2.0 - Counterparty, NXT, Bitchares, Mastercoin, Ethereum. Medium risk. Worth investing, some off thise will be very expensive soon. Crypto Assets or Crypto Equity issued on top of the Coins 2.0. LTBcoin, Swarm, Maidsafe, DomainShares etc. High risk (what will happen to LTBcoin if Counterparty or Bitcoin fall?). Worth buying for maximizing profit.

Others: DOGE, LTC etc... is noise. IMO. Even Namecoin, because Coins 2.0 will make it absolite.

I agree with the gist of your post. Maidsafecoin is only supposed to be held on the Mastercoin protocol until it is redeemed for SafeCoin on the SAFE network, once it is up and running.

This post is about the high cost of distributing LTBcoin over Counterparty because of the Bitcoin fees. Adam hinted at one possible solution, that is to move to DogeCoin. I see on page 5 you suggested using BitShares (good idea). I infer from one of his comments that bytemaster at BitShares has thought along those lines(see here.

I would agree that most of the current altcoins will likely be near worthless in terms of monetary value in the future. A handful of them could find strong niches though (but can anyone know which they'll be?).

My strategy is to buy a fixed amount of BTC per month. Then as new opportunities arise, I'll invest into new projects. I have a little SWARMPRE, Genercoin, and XCP. I have orders in to buy some Tatianacoin and Niceplum. I'm casting my net wide.

What do some of you think about a potential investment in NXT, Maidsafe, Ethereum, and Mastercoin?

I'm excited about Maidsafe and Ethereum. Lukewarm on NXT and Mastercoin. That being said I haven't placed any significant bets on any of them yet.

    • Ethereum - excellent idea for a platform, undecided about investment prospects.
    • Maidsafe - unique, excellent project to support for the ideology of it all (if that's your kind of thing). It could be huge, but will that translate into rising value of SAFEcoin?
    • Mastercoin - depends whether they can claw more "business" in. I've a feeling Counterparty is superseding it (?). Pros and cons with riding on bitcoin.
    • NXT - seems quite solid, not sure if it will continue long-term.

I'm an unskilled laborer with little expertise in this area though, so this is just my feeling.

The truth is that the long-term price of any altcoin (no matter how good or innovating that altcoin is) always goes down if you calculate this price in BTC. This includes LTBCoin btw, no matter how much we all want it to succeed. I love LTBCoin, NXT, DOGE, MMC, RIC but they will go down in price in the long term.

So given this unfortunate truth you would be fool to invest into anything but Bitcoin

If this is in reply to the previous post(?), I would say that Maidsafe (with their SAFEcoin to be) is very different and not an altcoin. It's more like a project which is intended to create a completely redesigned internet (and more). I recommend anyone who's not familiar with it takes a look.
