that is bad for bitcoin. website Bitstamp say:

Bitstamp Service Temporarily Suspended

We have reason to believe that one of Bitstamp’s operational wallets was compromised on January 4th, 2015.

As a security precaution against compromises Bitstamp only maintains a small fraction of customer bitcoins in online systems. Bitstamp maintains more than enough offline reserves to cover the compromised bitcoins.

IN THE MEANTIME, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE DEPOSITS TO PREVIOUSLY ISSUED BITCOIN DEPOSIT ADDRESSES. THEY CANNOT BE HONORED!

Customer deposits made prior to January 5th, 2015 9:00 UTC are fully covered by Bitstamp’s reserves. Deposits made to newly issued addresses provided after January 5th, 2015 9:00 UTC can be honored.

Bitstamp takes our security and soundness very seriously. In an excess of caution, we are suspending service as we continue to investigate. We will return to service and amend our security measures as appropriate.

It's not definitely not good. Although, we'll find out more in the coming hours. Here's what Wired wrote on the whole issue: http://www.wired.com/2015/01/bitstamp-offline/

If people will not massively cash out and keep using their service they can make back the lose by collecting transaction fees.

btc price seems not jet to react on it, this is a good sign. if we got a second mtgox i could imagine a drop to 200 or even 100. as of now there are not many buyers seen to stop the drop already. well if the drop of yesterday has to do with it i dont know but we had bears before in 3.1. already.

Hopefully it will turn out to be another whitehat hacker who returns the coins after initially exposing the vulnerability.

their fee should not cheap, but the price is so low now, withdrawal or hold? this is a prisoner's dilemma

I asked Johoe and he said it doesn't appear to be an issue of weak R values (which is really what he focuses on). He didn't offer any insight on the BItstamp issue, and said he saw the most technical info on Reddit (I have looked around Reddit yet). I tried tweeting to Bitstamp and a few of their high-up people to see if I could interview them for The Bitcoin Game, but I haven't received a response.

Peter Todd criticized that Bitstamp has moved their operation to Amazon servers. Peter thinks that basically gives the NSA total access to their data.
