I'm not sure what you mean by building vs buying. In the past you could 'build' your own rig with various graphics cards and pc components but right now anything other than an asic is at a huge disadvantage. Even the best of the best asic only has a small window of profitability and that's assuming you have relatively cheap electricity.

So, I have been researching the alt coins available and wondered if there are any ( I have searched for hours) that can even be mined using simply a GPU ( for a profit subtracting electricity ) I do understand the more senior coins that have grown are too difficult for the average home setup to calculate for profit I just wondered if I am missing something pardon my ignorance, thank you in advance for any replies.

In my opinion mining isn't profitable anymore, it's better to buy bitcoins directly and hold them for years.

I personally like to build my own miners. But, that's just the hardware. If you're going to mine, should also focus on the software - operating system choice, virtual machines, optimizing source code/compilation for your particular hardware as much as possible, etc. Realized, late in the game, just how important that is. Learn as much as you can. As well as buying and/or selling strategies on exchanges. There doesn't seem to be much support for simply buying hardware, ignoring software, finding the most profitable coin at the moment, mining it, and then dumping the coins on an exchange.

The only sub-1000 dollar miner i have is my personal computer which mines monero, at the moment, with the CPU (intel 4770K).

Are you getting some ROI with your miners?

I think mining is in limbo till the alt/bit coins start rising in price again. It took bitcoin to hit 1000+ before people took notice and started mining again. Patience, the day will come once again.

@cryptozio Are you getting some ROI with your miners?

Indeed. Initially invested about 4-5K USD but got back all of that when i mined feathercoin back when it launched - got in at a good time. Made a crazy amount of bitcoins even though i only mined it for 1 day. Did about half as good as that when ChinaCoin launched. Could have had another massive move when MaxCoin launched but i didn't know much about linux and i had low-end CPUs on all of my miners - two things that prevented me from mining it effectively when it lauched. So, i ended up buying MaxCoin when i should have been mining it and lost a bunch of bitcoins.

I don't know exactly how much i spend on electricity but monthly i'm asked to fork over about $200-$325. I have 3 miners doing ~700W each and my main computer (CPU mining only) that does much less than that. All miners 24/7. If i mined and dumped monero with Claymore's Windows miners (4 CPUs+ 7 R9 GPUs), i'd make about .022 BTC/day - last week i checked and it was .032 BTC/day so it's always changing. Difficult to make projections. But, i don't focus as much on mine and dump projections as i used to because i focus more on the things i mentioned in my previous post.
