Can anyone list the currently leading altcoin projects whose core principle revolves around anonymity?

Darkcoin Bithalo Monero Zerocoin? (I'm not sure if this is being worked on still)
From what I have gathered, these are the most promising so far.

You might want to take a look at Aero coin. If what they claim they are working on comes to fruition, that coin might be a nice add to your portfolio.

Zerocoin, which has the potential for serious anonymity according to those who can follow the math (not me) This is not some glorified shell game like coinjoin & friends, but one with a sound basis in math.
It was formerly known as zerocash. These days the zero knowledge proofs data that gets inserted into the blockchain is getting nice and small, like ~400 bytes. That's still too big for OP_RETURN (40 bytes) for things like counterparty. But it's perfect for something like Namecoin to implement because it allows up to 1k of arbitrary data.

I have no idea what you just said.

It's different. It might even offer anonymity that is truly reliable. If so, it'll be the only one.
I assumed you wanted to learn about them, just like @Alchemix assumed you were interested in investing in them. What is your interest anyway?

You are correct about my interest. I appreciate your dumbing it down for me. Not technologically savvy. But, the summary was understandable. Thanks.

Just remember the vast majority (99%+) of Alt coins are essentially worthless. You probably already know that, but just figured i might as well mention it nonetheless.
In the end,Alt coin investing is just a guessing game...and most of the time advice comes from people who seek new investors to increase value of their own portfolios.
Good luck OP

I would disagree. Alt coin investing is NOT a guessing game. All coins have fundamentals, differing utilities, experienced or inexperienced devs, etc.

Oh of course, the key point of advice for anyone, is to do his/her own research. Thats what i was basically saying...
