Who here owns a 3d printer? What have you printed?

Personally I'm ever calibrating my Mendelmax2. I'm mostly curious to hear if @adam has one at home. I mostly use mine to print parts to fix items around the house (leveling the bed, custom coasters for chairs, one handed bottle opener) but I have ventured into a project that aims to build the parts for a remote controlled fishing boat.

I have a dual extruder VISION still unbuilt in the box, it was the last thing I focused on before LTB took over and when it arrived like six months later, the 12+ hours of assembly required for a normal person, plus my complete ineptitude when it comes to all things building, assembling or non-thinky-stuff about machines meant it wasn't going to happen this lifetime.

I'm casually looking for someone to build it for me, just to throw that out there.

The Vision Dual Extruder "Plus" 3D Printer Kit - You pick the 2 or 3 colors (of our large selection of colors - including Glow-In-The-Dark colors) to totally customize your printer to your Team, School, or Favorite Colors. The Vision+ Dual Extruder 3D Printer increases the height of the parts you can create to 8.9" (225mm) so it can make parts up to 8.9" x 8.9" x 8.9" (225mm x 225mm x 225mm)! You are unique, and your 3D printer should be too. All 3d Printed Parts on the printer are printed in the 2 or 3 colors of your choosing. With 2 Extruders, you will be able to run 2 different colors, or 2 types of materials at the same time. (US Shipping Included, International Shipping Extra)

..and what a vision. From what I can tell it looks like the mendelmax 1.5 design.

I had heard that calibration was a nightmare for your model so I sunk myself in deeper with the mendelmax 2. What I got was years of calibration, but the connections I made at the local hackerspace made it worthwhile. Just last month I was printing a broken part for my melbourne based printer while I was in the vienna hackerspace.

You have the choice of keeping it in the box, working on it every night for at least a few months or taking it to your local hackerspace to have them put it together for tips / manage it there for you. I know at my local space if you want to use the 3d printer you feed it bitcoin, knowing that it will print what you need without a hassel.

No "local" hackerspaces in my neck of the woods but the point is taken

I don't personally have one but my brother does. He hasn't used it much for some of what you guys described above, calibration and general frustration in it's use. Also I guess he said it was hard to get the object being printed to remain in place on the printing area. So if you started the printer and left it for a while, the object eventually would break off of the surface and move with the printer head, making a giant glob of plastic.

If anyone's interested, here's a very recent TED talk about a new form of 3d printing where the object is printed out of a puddle of instead of layered. It's only about 10 minutes long and definitely worth watching!

I saw that one too but couldn't find the link, thanks irnhnve. They claim that it prints 100x faster and can print elastics, which will be great for a pair of custom crocs. If your brother is printing with ABS (LEGO plastic) then his heated bed may require cardboard or cork insulation underneath it. With PLA I hear usign a gluestick in the bed helps prior to printing.
