Monero looks very interesting to me. Very good initial distro. Well named privacy based coin.

Hobonickels and Diamond coin are my favorite (only favorite because for some reason I chose these POS coins).
These are POW/POS Hybrid coins with a nice 2% and 50% active stake. Fun coins to have, great future ahead of them and very stable for the past year or so that they have been around.

Its so hard, they all have minor differences, I used to think Stablecoin had all the answers but now I'm not so sure.. I dislike Proof of stake coins because it promotes holding them, which is bad for liquidity and the coin in the long run IMHO
Currently I like coins that have real world benefits (eg: curecoin) or those that work to make bitcoin better (eg: lower fees, faster transaction times etc)
The biggest is problem is avoiding those pump and dump coins that are no good for anyone, they ruin the reputation of cryptocoins and ensure that many coins that could/should get support and succeed, don't get it.

Its just so difficult to know whether an alt will end up as a pump and dump. So I just stick to BTC...until now with LTBc ;)

@itsaboutsharing I'm holding some XMR (Monero), XCP and I am eying what the app coins do. By far though, especially since the Lawsky announcement, I am in Monero. Cryptonote seems like the clear cut winner for anonymity on it's own merit. It blows out of the water what DRK and non Crpytonote coins do as far as anonymising.
I'm excited to see what Ethereum/Ether do when out. I am still a bit unsure about the whole "needing a separate currency" to make these apps work. NXT, XCP, Ether, etc. seem at least in part, to be methods of raising funds. There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but it seems like we are a bit inefficient here. I'm simplifying things down, but the app coin thing is starting to look like alt coins. Sure they will be 300 in the next year as well. ;-)
Have you read the latest Darkcoin announcement?: https://darkcointalk.org/threads/development-updates-july-15th.1788/
The new implementation scheduled for a couple weeks ahead looks amazing. I agree that cryptonote is good, but it has some problems with the size of the blockchain and there is no proof of payment, so I don't believe it can become really mainstream. I maybe wrong, but my bet and my wallet are with Darkcoin :)
I hadn't heard about the new feature of Dark. I think there will be many successful anonymous coins though. I think having the name "Darkcoin" is going to hurt adoption tbh. I just find it hard that stores will say "We accept Darkcoin." Now, for person to person transfers yes, but I can only imagine in court cases (if it ever comes to that), how much of a disadvantage one might be at.
The bloat of the blockchain of Monero is probably the main "flaw". I quote that as they are working on trimming it down substantially. Also, though a bit larger than bitcoins, with storage being what it is, it is not at all a problem to store it. Now, I don't want to have a node on my computer for Bitcoin either, so for sure they have to work on things.
But regarding the anonymity of Crptonote vs. Darks masternodes, I take the former by a long shot. Having masternodes can be quite dangerous, even if you get past the honey pot aspect. I mean how will you be able to spend them then? If you fall under a certain amount, then you are not a master node. I am no expert, but I read what experts said and so I am in Monero as it appears to be the best thus far. Really, that is my stategy considering my Computer Science understanding. I can't look at the code, but can read from experts who can. I have enough of a computer science background to follow the discussions and then make decisions.
Lastly and perhaps most importantly, have you seen the volume of Monero lately? It is over 2X that of dark and quite large (number 3 or so of all coins!) A few weeks (or month) back it was opposite that. So, dark, at least right now seems to be falling. If it bottoms I might get back in. This is really hard to call and diversifying some is probably in order, for even if you research till no tomorrow, you may not call correctly what the other "investors"/buyers do. I do know as fact that big money is moving in Monero (and not just from looking at the volume.) There are some big pockets who like it. Take that for what it is worth.
Thanks for the info, IAS

BitShares!
They call coins shares, shares in a company. Brilliant metaphor that can make sense of the Bitcoin 2.0 space, where people are discussing decentralized exchanges, gambling, kickstarters, voting, banking, insurance, Insurance, storage space, etc.etc.
