Hi,

I'm running at in the forum to bury the spammers posts but it's not effective, we are playing hide and seek.

What shall we do to stop this !!!

I'm running nuts !!

@Cryptonaut, help me please, I was thinking of 2 solutions, either we put a 6 minutes limits for newcomers, or we put captcha for posting for them and this can be limited to their post count, after they pass the 50 posts for example, the captcha or time limit will go down a bit or will be turned of.

What do you people think ?

I joined another forum recently that instituted a captcha for the first 5 posts or so, and then none afterward. Other than it not being explained ahead of time, I didn't have a problem with it as a legitimate user and it seemed to work reasonably well. It's a new forum, though, so i can't speak to long-term effectiveness yet.

Agreed. Captcha + email verification for account registration. Yes, there are relatively easy ways around them for dedicated spammers, but I think LTB forum is currently with an "Open House" sign outside where the rest of the neighborhood has deadbolt locks on their doors.

The problem is if both of us ran to delete posts, we will never finish this.

And I don't have the privilege to ban users.

I see the 6 minutes between posts as it's done in BCT is more than great.

Captcha and e-mail verification will still be passed, it's good move, but from my own humble point of view, I recommend the 6 minutes wait time.

And ask for password confirmation during sign-up if that hasn't been implemented in the mean time.

Yeah, the amount of spam is getting a little bit ridiculous. And whats with so much of it coming from the indonesia forum?

There already is email verification required on new accounts, as well as captchas for registering (I dont think additional captchas for posting will help much). hmmm, tricky problem. Might have to unleash the ban hammer :)

Maybe a restriction of posts for new users will help. E.g. first week of registration you only can make 3 posts, second week 5 posts and so on. Or first day of registration 1 post, second day 2 posts, ... This will definitely slow down these spammers.

I don't know how possible this would be to implement, but I still think passing a little "LTB questionnaire" in addition to the suggestions above would be a cool requirement for new users.

IMO, would essentially kill two birds with one stone:

-Educates new users about LTB, LTBc, and forum etiquette. Also, answers many FAQ's by having the user do the work to find these answers. All without happening in a series of repetitive forum Q&A posts.

-Eliminates the early junk post onslaught from new users tying to just game the system for LTB by incentivizing the early user instead to be educated about LTB with a nominal LTBc reward for "proof of education."

I do understand the need to not come off as limiting new users. However, if a bottleneck is going to be created, why not create one that also serves as an educational tool?

Bring on those ban hammers! I just asked @Cryptonaut to add the following warning to the post reply area about the consequences we've put in place.

Don't post spam/off-topic. Each time a moderator deletes/buries your forum post, you lose 4 PoP points and the corresponding LTBcoin.

    @kerneloops Exactly!

Perhaps having some forum examples as well (usernames removed) of spammy posts serve as multiple choice examples of what is spam and what is not. Like:

Which of the following is considered spam:

    User 1: ^^awesome post !!!! ;)

User 2: I really enjoyed this article. Do you have any suggestions on how I can learn more about this topic?

This is obviously a basic example, but I'm sure more could be identified from the countless spam postings out there. I'd even be happy to compile a list and make some more LTB questions if this is something the community thinks would be a good idea!

Lets keep brainstorming on the questionnaire idea etc.. in the meantime I am going to work on cooking up some improved moderator controls so we can deal with this stuff easier and without a billion email notifications to everyone :)
