I got in a discussion with a friend about the video games crash of '83 and how much they industry has changed. it got me thinking about which of the big 3 (Sony, Microsoft,Nintendo) would still be around 25 years from now.

I think that within the next 10 years Microsoft will try to move back to just PC gaming, with some sort of Xbox/PC hybrid in between.

Sony will probably be just a digital games service that you play on your TV and whatever kind of mobile devices we will have.

Nintendo will probably become what Apple is now. Releasing new hardware every few years that will seem mindblowing to many and a waste to others.

What do all of you think the future would be like?

What ever happened to SEGA? The Genesis was awesome- I remember beating that game Altered Beast in a few hours. Classic times...

All of the Sega Genesis add-ons happened, then the the Sega Saturn flopped, and then the Dreamcast became a pirating gold mine and was steamrolled by the Playstation 2. I would love to see Sega come back into the console scene with something like the Dreamcast 2.

@kerneloops I'm banking on the demise of Microsoft in the gaming world, and the PC gaming will shift to game optimized boxes that Valve via Steam (Linux) is trying to implement. Console games while good, in fact unbelievable in many ways already, still lack some of the depth a PC can offer. Windows on the other hand is sooo bloated and clumsy as a platform, nowadays the systems running Windows and the games have to be monsters (i.e. expensive). So I think Valve's idea of a dedicated PC with Linux running Steam, is the way to go.

A huge obstacle for Valve and others is to convince developers to shift focus to Steam on Linux, as the bread and butter for game devel has been Windows pretty much forever.

There's no doubt that PC gaming will live longer than any of the big 3. PC has always been ahead of the curve. I just like to think of how console developers will try to innovate to keep from being obsolete.

And yes to getting PC gaming off of Windows.

I didn't really forget them. PC gaming has gone at it's own pace ahead of console gaming. Honestly I believe that console makers main goal is to stay relevant when compared to PCs.

Yeah, I'm still not totally sure that our current virtual reality hardware will really take off. I've played around with the Oculus and it was really cool but I'm not sure if I can play a game with it for even an hour. I definitely want to play around with it some more though.

Haven't EA announced a service where you pay $x.xx per month and have access to all their titles and first crack at new titles? I know Sony weren't too keen on this as it goes against there pay per service.

But my point is that I think we will see a demise of video game systems and more entertainment systems all enclosed in a TV. Think what Apple do with the iMac.

So if that is the case I would agree with some of the other posters, Microsoft will fall away and Sony will be whats left as a major player. But I would envisage other game services being available.
