Stellar is a decentralized protocol for sending and receiving money in any pair of currencies. This means users can, for example, send a transaction from their Yen balance and have it arrive in Euros, Yen, or even bitcoin. We’re expecting to support the usual categories of transactions: payments to a merchant, remittances back home, or rent splits with a roommate.

You can hold a balance with a gateway, which is any network participant you trust to accept a deposit in exchange for credit on the network. Stellar also comes with a built-in digital currency, referred to as the stellar, which we’re giving away for free. The currency will have value (as determined by the market); however, its primary function is providing a conversion path between other currencies.

We hope that people will build applications on top of Stellar to help bridge the gap between digital and traditional currencies.

Stellar is only a fork of Ripple, in my opinion it is a pump & dump coin like many others, I don't see any innovation in it.

I like this concept. I am glad I read this post. I was not sure what stellar was used for. I did create my own wallet. I am not too techy that I can build applications. Perhaps I will pay off my college bill with digital currency and learn some more.

@soccruo Stellar is only a fork of Ripple, in my opinion it is a pump & dump coin like many others, I don't see any innovation in it.

The innovation is that Stellar has a transparent distribution which is actually happening now. Ripple's distribution has always been murky and this is the primary reason that a lot of cryptocoiners have shied away from it. It definitely drove Jed McCaleb and Jesse Powell away.

An analogy I see is that we now have two versions of Ripple - the RedHat version and the CentOS version. Which one wins the marketing campaign in the next 1-2 years? I have no idea but I like that the market doesn't have to choose Ripple Labs as the only option if they believe a product like Ripple has a future.

I'd also note - the founding of Stellar and the announcement of Jed selling his stake has forced Arthur Britto and Chris Larsen to do something with their large stakes. Something they should have done a long time ago but only decided to once they had to do something:

It's taken a couple of years to finally get this done. With Stellar, they just have a simple page describing the distribution and 1% of the coins have already been given away in only a few weeks of launch.

Where is the above on the Ripple Labs website? Totally missing.
