I bought a bit of bitcoin (using the bitcoin ATM in downtown Toronto), and have now done a couple test transactions using different wallets (coinbase, blockchain.info, and electrum) to see how things work.

Is there any software that does for bitcoin transactions what you can do with software like Microsoft Money, or Quicken for fiat money bank or credit card accounts?

i.e.:

  • download the most recent transactions on the blockchain for a given wallet (or all if the money software hasn't downloaded any for that wallet address).
  • allow you to enter comments about what that transaction was
  • allow for notes on the bitcoin to fiat exchange rate at that point in time if relevant.
  • allow you to "balance the wallet"
  • treat wallets as accounts or bills clearly showing transactions between them.

Something like this might work well for you, https://coincpa.com/about

The description looks promising, with the exception that I wouldn't want to use an online only tool to track all my bitcoin "banking" history.

Ignoring the online aspect, when I try this out, it shows the final balance for a wallet when it's address is entered, but doesn't appear to have a facility to markup previous transactions (or even show them, something that is possible with more primitive tools like https://blockexplorer.com/).

Asking the coin cpa development about this they say:

"Yes, we are working towards all of those things.

We are starting with balances and working towards listing all transactions. If you entered a public Bitcoin address, it should be able to give your balance (in BTC and in USD), and keep it up-to-date.

We do rely on some outside services at the moment which are not as reliable as we'd like. Some of them we will bring in-house as resources allow.

If you don't see the address, click on 'Bitcoin' in the Summary and then check the 'Show Zero Balances' and then refresh the address with the icon that looks like a circle with arrows to update the BTC balance."

... in short, the naive expectations of somebody who is used to using software of this sort, won't be satisfied at this point.

One thing to keep in mind is that most accounting software cannot handle more than 2 or 3 places of decimal precision past the decimal point. I know that quicken recently claimed to add some support for BTC but I don't know if they improved their precision as part of this work. The work around is to do your accounting in mBTC or in 'bits'.
