There is much excitement building around the worlds first decentralized internet MAIDSAFE. The implications are nothing less than staggering. It occurred to me today that a world with a strong MAIDSAFE network is a world whose information is hardened by virtue of redundancy that is securely private. This means that network hubs will no longer be a central point of failure. It means no back doors to compromise important public and private infrastructures. It means greater speed and efficiency for everyone. Initially the MAIDSAFE network was going to be based on a quid pro quo of resources, meaning if I allow 100 gig of my computers memory to be used for the network then I would have access to 100 gig of MAIDSAFE network resources. I believe this is still true but since the evolution of crypto-currencies it became possible to create a system wherein storage, applications and services may be purchased on the network with its own built in currency. The maximum amount of safecoin that can be created in this system is 2^32 or around 4.3 billion. And if necessary to facilitate trade each coin can be further subdivided by 2^32 yet again. I recently met David Lasoff online in his MAIDSAFE CAFE on google+ where I learned he was already drumming up a creative community that will take advantage of the new technologies that will be made possible because of MAIDSAFE. The name of this creative community is called Network99. To learn more about this community you can contact Lasoff through his blog. https://medium.com/@DavidLasoff/imagineering-a-safe-network-70c817b59228

I'll be honest, I don't dislike the sound of that :)
But, I'm also looking forward to seeing what maidsafe comes out with.

Do you need Maidsafe coins to use the Maidsafe network or are they for exchanging value on the network while still allowing anyone to use it?

Maidsafe coins are just placeholders for the official currency which is Safecoin. I believe to use the safenetwork you can do so by simply downloading the software and sharing a portion of you computers memory (after the public beta release in early 2015). If you would rather not share a portion of your memory for use in the network then you would have the option to purchase network bandwidth, storage and applications with Safecoin.
