I like magic words as a record of which podcasts I've listened to. I like looking at the list and thinking "wow! Look at all those podcast episodes I listened to."

So I'm in favor of extending the time period for those times when I am on vacation or whatever. A week seems reasonable to me.

I wouldn't want someone new to come to the podcast and rack up a bunch of PoP by listening to all the back episodes (or worse, by getting the codes from a friend). So there should definitely be a cutoff or drastic decline in PoP after a reasonable amount of time.

My vote is to make it simple and just cut it to a week for now. We've got some bigger fish to fry than implementing an algorithm for declining points over time (unless it is super easy).

Someday we'll have dynamically generated magic words inserted into the podcast that is unique to each user. Who's with me? :)

People could get an extra reward if they listen to all or at least 3 podcasts or something. They'll get a letter or a number in all shows and combine them to a word or just numbers by the end of the week.

@deweller, I also like being able to review which podcast I've listened to. Perhaps, rather than a declining point scale for delayed listening, a simple two tiered system, 20 points for a magic word submitted timely, and maybe just a single point for submitting an "expired" word. Then the user has a history of submitted words, timely or not.

Right, I think I'm leaning towards either something like this or a three phase system allowing for more points within the first month and then a single point as a tracking one like you've described

I've said this before (unsure if it was publicly or maybe just emailing with Cryptonaut), but since the subject is being discussed...

I agree that a week makes more sense than four days. I don't see a benefit to rushing people. A busy schedule plus a bunch of podcasts release in a short period can make it difficult to keep up!

Separately, a point of confusion is that the magic word system currently sets the expiration exactly 96 hours after the release. But listeners don't know what time of day a podcast was posted, the posts only show the release date (not time). So listeners can't tell what time of day the magic word expires on a specific day -- it could be 2am, or 20 hours later at 10pm. This can cause justified frustration to a listener who makes an effort to listen and claim their magic word in time, but doesn't make it because the original publication time was early in the morning.

So, regardless of the number of days (4, 7, or longer), I'd suggest one of the following: (1) an unwritten bonus day from the stated expiration date, (2) that the system allows until midnight of the expiration date, regardless of the time of the initial post, or (3) the system automatically adds to each podcast post, information stating the exact date and time the magic word expires.

BTW, I'm not sure why, but a full months seems long to me. I'd say 1-2 weeks feels right. Again, I'm unsure why, that's just my gut response.

All good ideas. I'm not really fussed how it works as it is up to LTB Adam and his objectives. I do like however diminishing points over a period of time, and I like the trailing point so as to have a record of listened to podcasts.

I like the idea of having a week to listen to pod-casts instead of 4 days. As for the older ones I think it is an excellent idea of gaining a few points, maybe you could do a kind of lottery system where certain "old" pod-casts offer high points, but know one will know which ones they are. It could be another selling point to sponsors knowing that even after a few months their advertising will be heard. Maybe a sponsor could contribute towards higher points for older pod-casts that they sponsored or appeared in.

I must admit that I may be a bit bias here, as on occasions when I have been up to date on pod-casts, I have gone back to listen to older ones that where posted before I joined.

Another idea is; say a developer of any coin, who is a guest on the show, could have the opportunity to offer a give-away on the show, by lets say announcing a redeemable code as a promotion, this could also entice new listeners to the platform. You can have that idea for free guys. ^-^

@adam So perhaps we should make them 40 points for the first week and 10 points for the next three then 1 point after that. It won't be effective to farm but it'll still let us track listening over a longer time period than the 4 days we current get a distribution on.

It will be more reasonable than only 4 days, imho. Like this idea too.

@Adam - hey, thanks for extending the Magic word times - takes the pressure off and means that I don't miss any!

Also just wanted to highlight a quick edit you need to make on the magic words page - it still says this

"Each word can only be redeemed one time per listener, and they're only good for FOUR days from the release of the episode it was obtained from. "

Keep up the great work. Love the shows and the endless stream of guests and commentary - a crucial way to keep up to speed on this ever expanding ecosphere.
