Last 2 Magic Words already expired?

This is getting confusing. One previous magic word definitely expired early. I created a thread about it but never got it resolved, so I guess I missed out on that one.

Another one since then seemed to work WAY after it was supposed to, so that was confusing.

Now I finally was able to sit down and listen to the last three episides. Published on the 18th , 19th, and 21st ... and just now tried to enter the three magic words. Two had already expired???

Should the one from the 18th have already expired? Surely not the 19th.

I dont know how anyone can listen to these hour+ long podcasts within 2-3 days of being published. At least not normal people. Im only able to do it because I work from home and don't have a regular 9 to 5. Anyways thats a different topic.

These are the three most recent episodes. Why are two of the magic words already expired?

Thx

For the record, I havent had any problems with any magic words lately.

I think we have to remember the magic words are simply a bonus. The "meat" of the podcasts are the podcasts themselves. Certainly some are better than others but thats besides the point

If you listen to them simply for the magic words, then i think your kinda missing the point... There have been times where ive listened to several episodes at a time, wrote all the magic words down, just to forget to actually submit them.

I would listen to them if the magic words expired within 24hrs or if we didnt get magic words at all.

Sorry to read you are having issues OP. Hopefully it will all work out in the end

hmm, strange. Can you PM me the magic words you were trying to use? Another thing to note is there is the time zone difference, the times posted on the site are in pacific standard time (los angelas, vancouver etc.)

I sync my iPod about once a week, because that's how often most of the podcasts I listen to come out. Because of that an episode may be nearly a week old before it even gets onto my iPod. If I happen to listen to other podcasts before getting to LTB it can be even longer. I started listening to the LTB network podcasts on the computer to get them in time. I suppose that's better for the site, though, as it gets me on the site looking at the ads.

lucky for me, i have time to check the forum everyday, at least 1 hour each day just to check if there any new post, comment or podcast, if there is a new podcast, i usually download it first, so that i can listen to it anywhere or anytime i have time.

as the podcast are usually interesting, i don't really have a problem with they're taking hours to listen to..

This happens to me frequently. Just this morning (11/19/2014), I tried using the magic word from #162 which was supposed to expire on 11/19/2014. Epic Fail.

I no longer assume that this means midnight on the expiration date, but probably means Eastern Time on the expiration date or midnight on the day before the announced date. I live on the west coast, and only sync my iPod once or twice a week, so I almost never get the magic words in time to take advantage of them. Some LTB podcasts (I'm looking at you John Bush) don't even announce the deadline in their recording.

Don't get me wrong, I love John (and just met him last weekend on his UnCoinVentional tour), but it would be helpful if the hosts would announce not just the magic words expiration DATE, but also the exact TIME that word will expire. Otherwise, you're just going to frustrate your listeners.

I don't know this for sure, but my guess is the magic word expires exactly 4 days from the date and time a podcast is released. So if an episode of Bitcoins & Gravy is released at noon, it expires at noon 4 days later. Can you confirm if this is correct @cryptonaut? Unfortunately, I don't know if there's any way for a listener to know what time that will be, since the posts just show the release date.

When I'm recording the audio for my podcast, I rarely know exactly when it will be released (I haven't gotten to that point yet -- maybe someday). But I suppose the magic word expiration date and time could be added to the podcast description at the last minute, so maybe that's a good practice for all LTB podcasters… I guess we all just need to be sure exactly how it works. LTB doesn't give out a handbook or anything to new podcasters, so we may not know much more than listeners do about many of the mechanics.

Anyway, thanks for your message. I hadn't really thought about the ambiguity involved in claiming a magic word close to the 4 day expiration. Maybe all LTB podcasters can be more precise with expiration information going forward. I also may rethink the time of day my future podcasts are released, based on your input.

@Rob yes you are correct, that is how it works. I kind of think it would be a good idea maybe to extend it from 4 days to 7 days?

I agree. I don't see any good reason not to allow more time, and it's clearly frustrating for listeners to miss out on getting credit because they are several hours late (and the actual cutoff time is confusing, since a podast can be released any time of day, but listeners don't have a way to know). And no matter what the stated cutoff is (4 days, 7 day, or whatever), I think it might be nice to extend the system's cutoff by 24 hours, so there's a grace period, to help mitigate the non-conformity of the cutoff times for each podcast. Happy listeners make for a happy podcast network!

BTW, I know you were doing something to the system, did you change the way the server keeps track of people being logged in? I suddenly have some new issues logging in from a second computer. I just kept instantly being logged off. But the computer I'm typing from now seems to still be logged in from awhile ago.

Thanks to Cryptonaut's confirmation, hope it makes sense what is happening to you. If the podcast comes out in the morning, you have until the morning, 4 days later (not until Midnight in a particular time zone). It isn't the best system (since the system isn't made clear to listeners), maybe it will be improved, thanks to people speaking up about it.
