Swarm is not really what I would call operational, but has the beginnings of what could be a successful crowdfunding platform. http://swarmcorp.com

    @ronky Hi guys,

any good kickstarting crowdfunding websites? Except for the obvious kickstarter and indiegogo :)

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

If you haven't seen the Bitcoin Starter website yet you might want to check it out at: https://bitcoinstarter.com

Bitcoinstarter is an excellent example of how if you give people a platform but don't help them use it properly to succeed, you taint the platform and any project it comes in contact with. I sent back and forth a bunch of emails with their founder last summer trying to get them to hire me and eventually for free for me to help them pick projects but they wanted to be the "If Kickstarter Rejected You, Come Use Us!" of the crypto world.

Unsurprisingly they've had an ENORMOUS failure rate because most of the projects they list are not very thought through, don't have enough details and don't even have the basics like a video. It's unfortunate because now it sorta doesnt matter, they haven't fixed it for so long that guys like me who are really interested in this space don't even visit any more because there's never been a good reason.

Even things I donated to and were successful (like FROG, a bitmessage client funded a year ago) don't seem to have gone anywhere at all https://bitcoinstarter.com/projects/98 - I hope I'm wrong and I just don't see any progress because there is no update page, but this was one of the only and most successful projects they ever funded and I don't see a single update in the last year anywhere.

So please don't hold up bitcoinstarter - it is an example of how not to do this, and they've been proving how bad their approach was, non-stop, for the last year.

No offense intended if they read this, if you can't be a shining example at least be a horrible warning :)

I've been trying to get a feel for what that site is like so it is good to hear an opinion on it. I asked a similar question recently about kickstarter sites using Bitcoin and the overwhelming opinion on reddit was Bitcoinstarter and a few other people chimed in to say that nothing good has really been on it yet which is why it has failed so miserably.

I think one of the major issues is that they just aren't Kickstarter or IndieGoGo. It is hard to get your foot in the door when you've got two major players and the only differentiating factor is that you do Bitcoin.

Is this a mainstream appeal problem? I've been wondering about it even more hearing that it hasn't really vetted projects and is struggling.

@torstenendofmoney We have been lucky with our Kickstarter campaign (documentary) but have been reading a lot about services like Swarm/Lighthouse/....

I think what you have to think about is how much 'commitment' would your supporters have towards your project. Do they REALLY want equity? Be a long-term partner? Do they REALLY have an interest in your long-time success? Most often I think the answer is no. supporters just want a DVD of a film, the album as mp3 download or some service.

    just my 2 cents

Really you're talking about the difference between Reward based crowdfunding vs. equity crowdfunding. I think you're right, most kickstarter style campaigns don't want equity funding which has real repercussions, but that's not to say you can't do reward based with a token. I think thats where the short term innovation will be, quite excited about it really.

Well, i do agree that equity funding is not desired by most of the campaigns. But, do you think that getting a token for your own project is they way to go? Like it would be more simple and easier, if i could just donate and get the rewards from the site in just bitcoin, getting into tokens and when you get into lots of them, its just frustratingly confusing.

Just like now'er days when i trade at crypty or any other, its gets frustrating to see so many alt coins in there. Yes you need choices, but so many choices just makes you crazy.

The issue is bitcoin is expensive and you have to buy it. That means in order to fundraise you would need to have money to buy the reward to give to your backers, which is counterproductive because it means now you need to raise more money. OR you wait to pay the Bitcoin reward until the project is done, but that's basically a normal kickstarter where you don't have anything but the promise and if you change your mind you have no option (compared to a token based campaign where you can sell your tokens at any point)

Ah!! i didn't consider that thing. Good point, so basically its something like USA, you can print money to reward your backers. No offense but that's easy to understand :p

Yes. Just like the "USA" with user created assets you put your faith (and credit) in the issuer of the asset.
