Yesterday I was minting some coins on a POS wallet when my computer crashed. Now I Always backup my wallets every week but I have got lazy when it comes to copying them on to a flash drive. I have about 20 wallets and it can be time consuming keeping on top of them all. I had no desktop for 24 hours and I was in mourning trying to calculate my loss, all I could do to take my mind off it was to revert to my iPad, buy some more BTC and do some more trading. Well luckily I got my computer back and to my relief all my data. I have now brought a potable hard drive and plan to backup more often. I have also opened an account with Coin Jelly who guarantee every wallet up to 20 BTC, going to spread my eggs around an ever expanding market. If your computer crashed while reading this, how many coins would you loose? For security reasons don't answer, but just think about it.

Nothing substantial but I would be very upset. I'm trying squeeze out the last 0.007 BTC from my block eruptors so my laptop has been on for a long time, Slush's pool has a 0.01 BTC payout threshold. They're connected to a hub with USB 3.0 which wont work with my raspberry pi. Until the block eruptors are decommissioned, Ill continue to stake my blackcoins lol.

I wouldn't lose much either but same.

I like to keep my savings secured through paper or usb wallets, investing/spending money in multiple forms in case anything fails/breaks down.

I've had it happen before I lost 14 LTC and .2 BTC that I had mined with my GPU. Wasn't more than a few bucks when it happened but would of been nice to have last last Nov.

I wouldn't lose any, I have everything backed up in a couple of places. But I'm more worried about losing track of all the places I have these files backed up and those getting compromised. Now I have everything password protected and encrypted in a second ecrypted container, but my old process was not as good.

    Nothing is easy.

My best understanding of the situation is that if the computer I usually use completely dies with all my data on it to, then I will lose 0 bitcoins. If my rarely used laptop computer with Bitcoin Core dies along with all it's accompanying data, then I still think I am covered with a backup of my wallet.dat file, but if I am mistaken about that . . . then less than 1.1 bitcoins will have gone to the great (fill in bitcoin witticism here) in the sky.

As a side note anybody have any good metaphors or turns of phrase for lost bitcoins and where they go? I love creative language and it's application to everyday phenomenon to make quotidian life a little more piquant.

Lost bitcoins go to hashven. There they have great refrigeration an unlimited supply of electricity.

    None. Not a single one.

    One word: Paperwallets.
