I was wondering how to create my own token on counterparty.

  Login to your Counterwallet (http://counterwallet.co). Aquire some XCP (buy some from an exchange for e.g). Click the "Create token" button in counterwallet. It costs 0.5 XCP to create a new token

  You also need testnet BTC in order to use it I think (which is still pretty easy to aquire)

  You should be able to get some with the faucets available. It took me no more then 5/10 minutes to get about 25 testnet BTC recently.

  You can also use Mycelium Testnet version, and buy for free from the automated Local Trader bot.

  So, I went to Counterwallet, but it also asks for BTC for a bitcoin fee, is this in addition to the XCP?

  I've created a few coins and there is a separate BTC fee for the transaction. I believe its somewhere in the .00025 range which comes to 15ish cents depending on BTC price
