Are they keeping a proportion of the coins or cashing them straight out?

How many multi billion dollar corporations do you think will need to accept bitcoin before people stop looking at bitcoin as a ponzi scheme.

I think things like this are what will trigger mass adoption. Each time a large retailer starts to accept bitcoin it legitimizes it more and more in the general public's mind. It will still take some time but each of these breaks down the barrier just a little bit more.

It's only a matter of time until announcements like these don't matter anymore -- because it will be weird if they don't accept bitcoin.

I find this quite surprising, I would not have expected something like this until next year at least. Some things are moving faster than anyone expected, while other things are moving slower. Ironically, I think the increased pace of bitcoin adoption by merchants is likely a big factor in the decline of many altcoins.
When speculation (and MTGOX shenanigans) was the main impetus behind the rise (and fall) of the price of Bitcoin, most altcoins, especially Litecoin, followed along almost as if loosely pegged. This peg has clearly disappeared, with many altcoins seeing declines in both price and volume. I think the reason is pretty obvious: Bitcoin is being used, by more and more people, for more and more things, while the altcoins mostly aren't and remain in the realm of speculators. Thus the decoupling. The network effect is staring to assert itself.
Personally, I have bought products using Bitcoin 4 times in the past couple weeks, once in the prior 2 months, and never in the prior year since I got involved. And I don't live in the US, so my options are much more limited. I own small amounts of several altcoins, but have never purchased anything with any of them.
Mind you, I don't think this means that Andreas was wrong in his speculation that we could see thousands to millions of alternative currencies. I just think this means they won't, mostly, exist as separate blockchains, but as assets on other distributed systems such as Counterparty and Ethereum. Once TCP/IP was good enough, no one really needed IPX/SPX anymore.

I'm amazed at all the skepticism from businesses when I explain that by merely accepting btc they will generate lots of free press. They act as if they are too busy or they don't want new customers. XD

Whatever the motivation, I think it's great P.R. for Bitcoin!
