Most of us believe that cloud mining is unprofitable. Now CEX.IO thinks the same. After the recent upscaling of the mining difficulty and the falling prices of BitCoin this message showed up on their page today:

Taking into consideration our users’ interests, the recent Bitcoin price drop, as well as the upscaling of the mining difficulty, CEX.IO Bitcoin Exchange would like to announce a temporary suspension of cloud mining services provided by the platform at the time of the next difficulty increase.

According to the 11.5. paragraph of CEX.IO Terms of Use:

“Mining with using User’s Gigahashes can be stopped by CEX.IO if the amount of the Maintenance Cost exceeds rewards for each mined block or if the mining is economically inexpedient.”

Thereby, all GHS formerly purchased by CEX.IO users remain their absolute property, with appropriate figures reflected in users’ profile balance. Additionally users will be able to manually enable mining with Gigahashes by their own choice.

“Suspension of CEX.IO cloud mining service is only a forced temporary measure, the result of cloud mining costs exceeding mining profit,” Jeffrey Smith, Chief Information Officer of CEX.IO. “Currently all cloud mining/maintenance costs are directed to the Hardware provider, hence, we are open for negotiations with additional mining hardware providers, who can offer favourable terms. And, as soon as we get an opportunity to upgrade mining hardware, or come to more efficient terms with energy suppliers, cloud mining process will be automatically resumed.”

Meanwhile, CEX.IO will continue operating as full service exchange platform for trading cryptocurrencies and fiat money.

I could be wrong in my chain of thought, but can we assume cloud mining is more profitable for businesses than regular mining. I think so since businesses would otherwise just stick to regular mining as they would make more profit this way. So you have to ask yourself: If even the cloud mining venture was more profitable for the companies, turning them off might just mean that even regular mining is not at all profitable anymore.

Methinks this boom year will bring a lot of pain to small-medium sized farms.

I'm actually ok with this, this is what's supposed to happen. Plus it should give some other players a chance to get into the game, especially when difficulty goes down because of it. At least they aren't trying to pull a GAW and create some shady altcoin scheme to keep people sinking money into them... Plus, now nobody can claim that GHASH.IO is trying to take over 51% of the network like all that nonsense that happened last year

+1 This is what's supposed to happen.

The mining bubble has exploded because of the price correction so they made the most easy thing. Close their mining services and activity.

Let's see if other 'farms' do the same, but IMAO this BTC price correction is pulling out of the way the ones that are in the crypto-world obsessed with money.

What about pointing all that hashing power to an altcoin pool that is more profitable right now? Or have all of the SHA-256 alts followed BTC down in value?

CEX.IO have their own pool so it's their business, they can't (and I imagine that they don't want) point their hashes to another pool, as easy as that.

They don't have any profit and instead of helping the network and be patient they close their miners, as easy as that, lol.

I said so often here cloud mining is not proffitable. I said a hundred times. And now you come on and cry? Of course the owner rent his material for more money then the mining would give, why the hell he would rent it otherwice? A month ago I saw mining fee higher then payout on cex.io

I guess I've said this too many times already, but cloud mining is not a sustainable business. This can be demonstrated by an example:

Suppose BTC Cloud, Inc. has a farm that they intend to lease out to cloud miners with 1 year 1 TH/s contracts. Currently, 1 TH/s generates about 3.7 BTC per year (assuming no change in difficulty), so how much should BTC Cloud sell the contract for?

The customer wants to make money, and obviously won't pay more than 3.7 BTC for the contract, so the company must sell the contract for less than 3.7 BTC. But, it would be ridiculous for the company to sell a contract for less than 3.7 BTC when they could just keep the 3.7 BTC that they mine.

Well, it wouldn't be completely foolish because there are 2 reasons why the company might sell the BTC at a discount.

    • The company believes that that value of a bitcoin may drop in the future, so they want to hedge. The problem with this is that cloud mining is a very expensive and inefficient way to hedge. A more efficient way would be to sell forward contracts.
    • The company wants money up front to invest in a bigger farm. In effect, the company is borrowing money. It is very expensive and inefficient way to borrow money. The company should just get a loan, or get capital investment.

Given all that, I can think of 3 reasons someone might want to run a cloud mining service:

    • They can take advantage of newbies that don't know how mining works.
    • They haven't put much thought into it.
    • It's a classic Ponzi scheme.
