@mic Coming from Nairobi Kenya (East Africa) and an avid fan & listener of the LTB show, I hear and read a lot of misinformation and misconceptions about bitcoin and how/what it can do for developing countries including Africa.

I can't speak for the whole of the 'developing world' but, I and others, can help clear out misinformation on bitcoin in East Africa. If there are other Africans out there on the LTB network, please chip in and share.

While it is great that bitcoin can enable the African continent, and I believe it can, it's also important to get the facts straight. Here is one misleading title & article

“One third of Kenyans now have a Bitcoin Wallet” – was a misleading title on an article about Kipochi.

I decided to set up this thread for discussion, links to materials and posts on the subject

Bitcoin have moved beyond what you are talking about in Africa, my friend even mine, trade and do business with bitcoin over there.

Ebola, Western Union and where Bitcoin is failing to live up to its promise

    • Western Union has grant of US$25,000 to the International Medical Corps for Ebola

    • Western Union is enabling donors to give to the American Red Cross as part of a “no transfer fee”

    • Western Union Foundation will match two-for-one employee donations, through October 17, 2014, made to the Western Union Foundation directed toward the Ebola Outbreak Response, up to a total match of $25,000.

Where is Bitcoin and the bitcoin foundation in all this? All talk and no play? This is/was a perfect opportunity for bitcoin to assert its qualities and gain ground on good press coverage -- an anti(Silk road story if you will)

yeah, where's dogecoin when it's really needed? lol.. seriously.. is there anything big that cryptocurrencies can do at this stage? if everyone had hardware wallets with bluetooth & wifi they could all transact without making skin-skin contact. but that's a long way away. is there anything realistic we could do besides send 'em some doge?
