LTB Disruptive Books #1 - By the People by Charles Murray (NonFiction)
Hey folks, first book on the docket is a zinger, here's @bitcoindaddys suggestion
How about putting some LTB disruptive panache into strengthening the disruption envisioned via The Madison Fund which is/was inspired by Charles Murray, in his recent book 'By The People'
From the site"American freedom is being gutted. Whether we are trying to run businesses, practice vocations, raise our families, cooperate with our neighbors, or follow our religious beliefs, we run afoul of the government - not because we are doing anything wrong but because the government has decided it knows better. When we object, that government can and does tell us, "Try to fight this, and we'll ruin you."
Sound familiar? There are a lot of people getting ready to take Charles Murray's Libertarian disruptive inspiration and run with it. I am reading this book now.
Having picked it up last week, it's a book worth reading and discussing in this nascent group.
Here's how this is going to work: Over the next two weeks I'd like anyone who wants to participate to acquire and read or listen to the book. We'll talk about it in this thread and at the end of the discussion we'll pick one or two members of the book club based on their contribution to the conversation and do a podcast recording with @andreas, me and the book club members for a live discussion about the book that would be edited and released.
If you just want to read along, you're welcome to do that as well - You can find By the People on Amazon (affiliate link)

Re: Creating a PodCast
Hey hcf27, The place to start is sending in a draft or pilot episode and that would be to me at [email protected] The file should be .mp3 (mp4 is video), we prefer shows be at least 25 minutes long and there is no upper boundary although if your content is long it should be interesting enough to justify it.
You also will need to make sure if/when you accept sponsors, they do not fall into our disallowed industries https://letstalkbitcoin.com/sponsortos
The system will be getting more formal in the near future as we complete the redesign and roll out more tokenly tools integration, so just be aware if you decide to get in now it's at the end of an era and the beginning of a new one that will have a bit more structure without compromising creator independence.

Re: payment channels for freelance work?
That's a great idea, we just an application that can enable it between users.... I wonder if @loon3 could build this into the Companion :)
@adam so you're saying that this is not too difficult, technically speaking? I thought all of this required a soft fork to even be feasible.
This would definitely not require a hardfork, I was talking with @loon3 about this in the LTBn slack and as he's pointed out here, it's already possible in Bitcore which is used extensively in the companion so if someone wants to try building it in, make it so :)
We don't have the resources to devote to something like this right now but I don't think it would be very difficult, mostly you'd need a designer to really figure out what freelancers would want from the interface and what information is important to the users.

Re: payment channels for freelance work?
@shawnj I'm thinking of doing some freelance editing, and a thought occured to me- scammers are all over in the freelance world. and a lot of the scams don't even violate the contract. here are some examples: http://accrispin.blogspot.com/2012/09/guest-blog-post-7-freelance-writing.html
Could payment channels be used by freelancers of all types.. for milestone-based payments, or pay-per-revision, or pay-per-hour, or whatever?
edit: Forgot the shameless plug.. If anyone needs any video editing done I'm available :D My videos are here: https://www.youtube.com/user/kvidal88
That's a great idea, we just an application that can enable it between users.... I wonder if @loon3 could build this into the Companion :)

Thanks for the first suggestion, I picked up a copy just now - I figure we'll pick the first book once the first batch of attendees self-identify themselves

The LTB Disruptive Book Club
The Point (Why a Book Club?):
- Read interesting books,
- Apply the thinkings to your life as applicable
- Discuss findings and results with others
Oh, and also it'll be fun.
Lets Talk About Books
I'm interested in both fiction and non-fiction, some examples I've already read (but wouldn't mind reading again for the refresher and conversation) might be:
Non-Fiction
- The Spider and the Starfish (a book to understand decentralization)
- The Master Switch (a book to understand the cycle of disruptive technologies and the habits of monopolies in the post-civil war american experiance)
Fiction
Snowcrash (a book to understand a multi-polar future "free agents" scenario) Reamde (a book to understand the power VR will have on our lives)
In the future we'll have some kind of token access wackyness but for now lets just start things off in this thread and once the thread gets too difficult to manage we'll switch to a new public board.
What books should we add to the list? Give a title, link to it on amazon and if you've read it what you think the broad reason to read the book is.
What Should We Read First?
