Depends on what you are mining. For bitcoin, definitely not. For other coins maybe. Mining pc's are usually not great gaming machines, they comprise of one or more very expensive gpu's, and the rest is very cheap. You have an i7 but that adds nothing in gpu mining( i don't know about cpu coins). The brand of gpu is important too, amd has a higher hashrate usually.

Mining isn't profitable, expecially with bitcoins because you would need some dedicated hardware.

At the moment, I don't think CPU mining is profitable. GPU mining however is, if you pick the right coins. Expect to break even on your hardware in 6-8 months.
Personally, if I were to build a new rig, I'd go with a 6x750 TI setup. You can build this from scratch for ~$1070. They are extremely energy efficient for their power and you'll save in the long run. Plus if you ever want to expand you don't have to worry too much about overloading circuits in your house.

even with a powerful rig you must be very lucky to profit from altcoins

You might be able to get a bit of coins from mining an alt-coin (something smaller even than dogecoin or litecoin). With bitcoin you need ASICs to even stand a chance of getting anything.
