I've got a little bit of experience with Solr, and could try to set you up with search solution if that would be useful? For the front end I'd suggest https://github.com/evolvingweb/ajax-solr, but I've not used that myself.

@cryptonaut will take a look at it when he gets time, right now he's crunching towards the first release of the new collaborative editorial multi blog system. The platform is open source so if you wanted to make the neccesary changes it's out there.

Thanks Adam. This isn't about making changes per-se, it's simply about indexing the current content into a Solr server, then building a JS interface to that server (which is then just 'included' here). If you can give me access to the content database (via an API?), I can index it in Solr to show you the search solution. Hope that's clearer?
Cheers,

That's what makes this community really valuable, open source.

I definitely like the idea of doing all the indexing and searching from a different server, search engines are a pain to build :p
We have an API you can use. Right now the documentation for it is between a couple different documents. check it out:
General web API and blog API: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uR6blRenaiIHBriaSOERuOVfx3oaI-v6xg799UQhSXg/edit
Forum API: https://github.com/tokenly/tokenly-cms/tree/master/www/slick/App/API/V1/Forum
Feel free to message me if you run into issues

Thanks, looks solid. Now I just need to find the time to try it out... Cheers, Dan.

OK, I can work with it as is, but for convenience, can you implement a '/replies' end point?

the /threads/{thread ID} endpoint provides both thread data and the list of replies. e.g https://letstalkbitcoin.com/api/v1/forum/threads/need-help-setting-up-a-solr-search-server

Exactly, so I'll have to enumerate over each thread id. That's fine, but not so convenient.

Here is my work in progress (mostly just plumbing at the moment). I've decided to use Elasticsearch instead of Solr, just for fun: https://github.com/dbolser/tokenly/blob/master/indexing_wip.pl
I'll make a pull request once it's working. BTW, where should I put this file?
Also, I found a 'bug' in the API commonly known as a UTF8 BOM 'issue': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark
Here's a discussion of the issue: https://gist.github.com/dbolser/d002bde517d088fe4c25
