I second Audacity (with the lame extension so you can export mp3 files). You can also use it to speed up podcasts you listen to.
A good quality mic is probably your most important investment (aside from time). Research your mic and be careful when you buy. Find out what mics are available to you and post about them on forums so you guarantee yourself a good one.
I just DL Audacity and already like it (especially since its FREE).
@eshriek Your mic points are very important too, but can you possibly shed a little more light?
Do you have any specific brands that you could recommend from experience?
One thing in the future that i would like to focus on is remote live interviews.
Im thinking that a high quality mic would be absolutely essential for getting good quality sound when interviewing people possibly outdoors.
